The Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) Program is sponsored by the United States Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA). As part of the Fulbright Foreign Student Program, the Fulbright FLTA Program is designed to develop Americans' knowledge of foreign cultures and languages by supporting teaching assistantships in more than 35 languages at hundreds of U.S. institutions of higher education. The program offers educators from over 55 countries the opportunity to develop their professional skills and gain first-hand knowledge of the U.S., its culture and its people.

U.S. campuses, like the University of Oregon, enhance their teaching of languages and expose students to a true understanding of people of different nations. This academic year, we will be welcoming FLTAs from Egypt, Tanzania, Turkey, Brazil, and the Philippines. Celebrating the Legacy of Janet Mersereau

University of Oregon alumnus, Janet Hughes Mersereau (BA ’69, MA ’71), is remembered for the many ways she served others as an educator, mentor, volunteer, and writer. Her career followed a clear commitment to education and community support, leading her to teach in diverse settings such as migrant education programs, vocational schools, community colleges, and ESL classrooms.

Her generosity and support for international education continues through the Janet Mersereau Scholarship Fund, which provides support for the Fulbright FLTA program through the Yamada Language Center.
