AEIS courses help international students develop advanced expertise in English and acculturate to the UO academic community. AEIS courses are credit-bearing and count as elective credits toward UO graduation requirements. Students may enroll in other UO courses while taking AEIS courses.

Who has AEIS requirements and who is exempt?

AEIS courses are a UO Admissions requirement for international students. However, students who meet at least one of the following conditions are exempt from the requirement:

• Students who have a verified score of at least 80 on TOEFL (IBT), or at least 6.5 on IELTS, or at least 110 on DuoLingo Test (DET);

• Students whose first language is English;

• Transfer students to the UO who have completed WR 121 and 122 at their previous college;

• Students with a bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited U.S. college or university;

• Students with an International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma;

• Exchange or sponsored students who are not seeking their degree from the UO;

• Students with SAT or ACT reading/writing/language scores in the top 10%.

Students who do not meet at least one of the conditions described must take a placement test and complete courses during their first year (see Exemptions to Proficiency Requirements on the UO Admissions website).

What is AEIS placement testing?

Placement testing determines which courses you need. Undergraduate students whose native language is not English and who do not meet one of the other conditions above must take the placement test. 

How and when can I take the placement test?

You will receive an email from the UO Testing Center with information about taking the AEIS Placement Test online. This email should arrive several weeks before International Student Orientation (ISO). Because the placement test is online, you should take it before traveling to Eugene for orientation.

What are the different AEIS courses?

AEIS courses are not sequential and can be taken in any order except for AEIS 112 (see the prerequisites). 

AEIS 101 - Academic Oral Communication I (4 credits)

Students in this course will enhance their speaking and listening skills through small group presentations and discussions, mirroring the discourse patterns of their academic classes.

AEIS 102 - Academic Oral Communication II (4 credits)

Students will develop oral-aural competence, emphasizing speaking both in small groups as well as formal class presentation.

AEIS 107 - Reading Academic Discourse (4 credits)

Students will learn effective study skills in approaching material from text for better overall comprehension, speed and confidence and vocabulary development for general academic topics.

AEIS 110 - Written Discourse I (4 credits)

This academic writing course helps students develop university-level writing skills with a focus on grammatical accuracy, and sentence and paragraph structure.

AEIS 111 - Written Discourse II (4 credits)

This academic writing course helps students develop university-level writing skills, focusing on components of an argument essays and essay exams.

AEIS 112 - Written Discourse III (4 credits)

Prerequisite – AEIS 110 and 111, or Placement test, or special permission from AEIS Advising 

This academic writing course helps students develop university-level writing skills, focusing on position papers and a multiple-source library research paper.

How do I know which AEIS courses I should take?

After taking the AEIS Placement Test online, scores will be sent to The UO Registrar and required classes will be listed on your degree guide. It is YOUR responsibility register for classes and complete your requirements in a timely manner. Registration for classes is on DuckWeb. If there are any questions about AEIS courses or problems registering for AEIS classes, you should talk to a UO advisor or email the AEIS Advisor.

Can I take Writing 121 before taking AEIS writing classes? 

Students who place into AEIS writing classes are strongly advised by the Composition Department to finish their AEIS writing requirements before taking Writing 121. Students who take AEIS courses before WR 121 are generally more successful in the composition classes.  

IMPORTANT: Students who take WR 121 or 122 at UO before taking AEIS courses ARE NOT exempt from AEIS requirements (see exemptions above).

I’m an exchange student, a transfer student or an exempt student. Can I still take AEIS courses? 

Exchange, transfer or exempt international students may take AEIS courses if they choose. To receive permission to take any AEIS courses please contact AEIS Advising. Please provide your student ID number and the course you would like to take in your email.

I’m exempt from AEIS, but I see them on my Degree Guide. What should I do?

Please contact AEIS advising. AEIS Advising will investigate and contact the Registrar to request the requirements be removed from your degree guide.
