All new and returning Music GEs are required to attend the meeting. Featuring introductions from select SOMD staff and a visit from the GTFF.

All new graduate students who will be a Graduate Employee assigned to teach in the Keyboard Lab (FMB 111) during the 2026-27 Academic Year are required to attend the meeting. Returning Graduate students who previously held GEs in AY 25-26 and who taught in the Keyboard Lab are not required to attend.

This orientation will cover the "house rules" required for this specialized classroom and the technology within. 

All new and returning students who have a GE in Secondary Piano and/or will be working as an instructor for CMI's Suzuki Piano Program during the 2026-27 academic year are required to attend the meeting.

For Master’s Students in Music Performance, Jazz Studies, Conducting, and Graduate Performance Certificate.

All incoming graduate students are required to attend their assigned Orientation & Academic Advising session. During this session, we will build your class schedule, register for classes, and make sample schedules.

For Master’s Students in Musicology, Music Theory, Music Education, Music Composition, and Intermedia Music Technology.

All incoming graduate students are required to attend their assigned Orientation and Academic Advising session. During this session, we will build your class schedule, register for classes, and make sample schedules.

All new and returning graduate students in Music Education are required to attend the meeting, led by Music Education faculty.

For Music Doctoral Students (PhD and DMA).

All incoming graduate students are required to attend their assigned Orientation and Academic Advising session. During this session, we will build your class schedule, register for classes, and make sample schedules.

All new and returning graduate students who have a graduate employee appointment as an instructor in the Community Music Institute's Piano or Suzuki Strings programs during the 2026-27 academic year, and student employees hired to teach in CMI for fall term, are required to attend the meeting.

The UO Student Workers union (UOSW) has been invited to attend this orientation, as required.

Whether you're new to campus or returning for another year, this is a great opportunity to connect with the SOMD community and learn about student organizations, ensembles, clubs, and involvement opportunities.

Bring a blanket, relax in the SOMD Outdoor Amphitheater, enjoy free snacks, and chat with representatives from music and dance student organizations about ways to get involved.

Required for all new incoming master's students in composition, and optional for undergraduates (to be determined during advising).

To test out of Fall, Winter, and Spring sequences, student needs to demonstrate the following proficiencies:

1. Major scales: hands together in two octaves, systematic fingerings, all keys

2. Minor scales (harmonic & melodic): hands together in two octaves, systematic fingerings, all keys

3. Arpeggios: hands together in three octaves, systematic fingerings, all major and minor keys

4. Sight-reading: ability to sight-read excerpts comparable to the level of Anna Magdalena Bach Notebook or Bartok’s "For Children" Book 1, with 2 minutes of preparation

5. Repertoire (Baroque): a Baroque repertoire at early advance level or comparable.

a. Examples: JS Bach’s Two-Part Inventions or a dance movement of JS Bach’s French Suites

6. Repertoire (Classical): a first movement of a Classical sonatina at early advance level or comparable.

a. Examples: Clementi’s Sonatinas, Op. 36 Nos. 2 or 4, Kuhlau’s Sonatinas Op. 20 No. 1 or Op. 55 No. 3

7. Repertoire (Romantic or Contemporary): a Romantic or contemporary character piece at early advance level or comparable.

a. Examples: Schumann's Kinderszenen, Grieg's Lyric Pieces, Bartok's Mikrokosmos Volume 5, or A. Tcherepnin's Bagatelles Op. 5

If the exam is not passed, students must enroll in three consecutive terms of MUP 163: Functional Piano for Composers.
