All new and returning Music GEs are required to attend the meeting. Featuring introductions from select SOMD staff and a visit from the GTFF.

All new graduate students who will be a Graduate Employee assigned to teach in the Keyboard Lab (FMB 111) during the 2026-27 Academic Year are required to attend the meeting. Returning Graduate students who previously held GEs in AY 25-26 and who taught in the Keyboard Lab are not required to attend.

This orientation will cover the "house rules" required for this specialized classroom and the technology within. 

All new and returning students who have a GE in Secondary Piano and/or will be working as an instructor for CMI's Suzuki Piano Program during the 2026-27 academic year are required to attend the meeting.

Thanks to the generosity of Herb Merker and Ken Sandine, the members of two UO small groups will be awarded a scholarship. Scholarship recipients are chosen annually in a separate audition prior to the start of Fall term each school year. These groups are open to students of any major. Auditions are held in a group format and judged by a faculty panel. These ensembles, which include JazzArts Oregon, will represent the UO's Jazz Studies Program in concerts throughout the region.

Auditions in the Fall of 2026 for Chamber Choir, University Singers, and Repertiore Singers will take place over three days during the Week of Welcome (9.24, 9.25, and 9.27), and during the first three days of fall term. All UO students, no matter their major, are welcome in any of our choirs. We have choirs appropriate for all experience levels, from people who have sung in a choir for many years, to people who would like to join a choir for the first time.

The University Opera Ensemble is open to all members of the university community by audition only. All SOMD music majors must have their studio teacher's permission to participate.

Register to Attend: Dance Orientation, Dance Placement & BFA Auditions here

Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) candidates will participate in the morning placement class, present a 3-5 minute solo, and have a brief interview with the dance faculty.

Guidelines for solo 

Perform a 3-5 minute solo from any idiom or style that you feel presents you in your very best light. The movement may be choreographed (by you or another) or improvised. A separate studio will be available to prepare for solo performances. We will provide aux cable and adapters to play your music from your phone or other device during the audition.

Be prepared to change easily between:

• soft slippers or thin cotton socks for ballet (no point shoes);
• bare feet for contemporary and African;
• and clean sneakers for hip hop.

Please be prepared to answer the following questions in the interview with faculty:

• What would you like to tell us about your movement background?
• Why are you interested in earning a BFA in Dance at the University of Oregon?
• How do you see yourself working and collaborating with the community in our dance program as well as the greater community at the University of Oregon?

Auditions required for BMME Choral, BM Voice, BA/BS Applied Study: Voice, MM Voice, MM Choral Conducting, DMA Voice and all voice scholarship recipients.

Please plan to present one (1) selection. It can be one of the pieces you sang for your SOMD audition, or something new. Here are some general guidelines:

UNDERGRADUATE: A classical piece in English, Italian, French, Spanish or German. GRADUATE: An art song (Lied, mélodie, etc.), or an aria from an opera or oratorio.

Memorization is required, except for selections from the oratorio repertoire. An accompanist will be provided.

4. Sight-reading: ability to sight-read excerpts comparable to the level of Anna Magdalena Bach Notebook or Bartok’s "For Children" Book 1, with 2 minutes of preparation

5. Repertoire (Baroque): a Baroque repertoire at early advance level or comparable.

Join Chris Mothersole, UO doctor of musical arts student and electroacoustic clarinetist, and classical trio Oasis Ensemble for a dynamic evening of chamber music and genre-bending original works combining clarinet and bass clarinet with guitar effect pedals.

A conservatory-trained clarinetist with a love of rock and vintage video games, Mothersole is a classical crossover artist and composer based in Eugene. Praised for his “pure, yet colorful tone and amazing technical facility”, Mothersole’s work is at the forefront of clarinet performance with guitar pedal effects in classical music. His music is inspired by video game soundtracks old and new, blending the expressive versatility of the clarinet with the tonal palette of the electric guitar to create sounds rarely explored in the genre. This evening celebrates the release of his debut solo album as a performer-composer, “Press Start”. A passion project four years in the making, this groundbreaking concept album combines classical composition techniques with the rhythmic gestures and harmonic language of video game music, answering the “What If?” of the possibilities of using pedal effects with classical wind instruments.

Oasis Ensemble

Oasis Ensemble is a unique flute–cello–piano trio comprised of highly accomplished and passionate chamber musicians, performing classic masterpieces, and exploring innovative programming with visionary living composers. 

Dawn Weiss was the principal flutist of the Oregon Symphony for 25 years prior to founding the Oasis Ensemble, receiving high critical acclaim throughout her career. Cellist Austin Bennett was a member of the Eppes String Quartet and has performed with the Tallahassee Symphony and the Eugene Symphony. Tung Nguyen is an award-winning pianist, chamber musician and solo recording artist on the Naxos label.

Founded originally as a flute and cello duo in 2022, in 2023 we expanded into a trio with piano to give us a wider range of musical options, focusing on well-known masterpieces, hidden gems, superb quality arrangements, and exceptional compositions fresh off the press. Our carefully curated programming showcases a beautiful and diverse range of colors, dynamics, textures and emotive potential that is unique to our combination of instruments. To augment our music library, we do extensive research, encourage composers to write for us, and arrange works originally composed for other instrumentation.

To continue the process of enlarging the pool of excellent flute, cello and piano pieces, in April 2025 we established our first "Oasis Ensemble Call for Scores" competition, which drew a remarkable response from 85 composers representing 23 countries. The award-winning composition was "Soundtrack to an Imaginary Video Game" by Meadow Bridgham, which will be featured in our fall 2026 concerts. Many of the submissions were so compelling that we have begun including them in our programs. 

We hope to be able to continue commissioning new works and to establish future composition events to encourage seasoned composers as well as talented young composers to write for us. We are actively seeking funding for this endeavor. Since our inception, we have performed over 65 works, including 23 world or West Coast premieres. Our recent project with Cascadia Composers (the Pacific Northwest chapter of the National Association of Composers/USA) featured us in "River of No Return" on their 2025–26 Marquee Series: a five-concert tour across Western Oregon, with programs drawn entirely from the work of living composers. 

As advocates for bringing chamber music to Oregonians where they live, we offer concerts in multiple cities across western and central Oregon. We perform for audiences inside and outside the concert hall by partnering with schools, universities, libraries, retirement centers, and cultural organizations and offering educational workshops and interactive performances. We are committed to expanding cultural awareness and knowledge of the beauty of live and recorded classical chamber music through accessible, engaging, and meaningful musical experiences. Oasis Ensemble is a designated 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. 

Musica Stellarum: The Art of the Viola da Gamba brings together three acclaimed early-music performers for a celebration of one of the Baroque era’s most expressive and virtuosic instruments. Viola da gambist Caroline Nicolas and lutenist/theorbist Kevin Payne join harpsichordist Dr. Joyce Wei-Jo Chen for three Oregon performances, bringing music from Nicolas’s recording project into the distinctive settings of the University of Oregon’s Berwick Hall, Mount Angel Abbey Church, and the Chapel of Christ the Teacher at the University of Portland.   At the heart of the program are two towering masters of the French viol: Marin Marais and Antoine Forqueray. Their contrasting styles were famously characterized in the eighteenth century as Marais playing “like an angel” and Forqueray “like the devil.” From Marais’s elegance, refinement, and imagination to Forqueray’s fiery virtuosity, the program reveals the extraordinary expressive range of the viola da gamba. Alongside these French masterpieces, J. S. Bach’s Sonata in G major for viola da gamba and harpsichord transforms the viol into an equal partner in an intricate musical conversation.   Together, Nicolas, Payne, and Chen bring some of the finest music written for the viola da gamba to Oregon—music by turns intimate, elegant, dazzling, and dramatic, heard across three very different spaces and acoustic worlds.
