Week of Welcome Auditions

UO jazz ensembles (Big Bands, Combos, Latin Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Guitar Ensemble) are open to all University of Oregon students (including part-time and Continuing Education students) by audition, regardless of major.

Auditions for the UO jazz ensembles are held during Week of Welcome each fall. A single audition is used to place students in Big Bands, Combos, Latin, and Guitar ensembles. Students auditioning for these ensembles in the Fall term need not re-audition in winter or spring terms. 

Each audition will last roughly 5-15 minutes. Please visit the jazz website to sign up for your audition time and download audition materials (available July 1st).

Thanks to the generosity of Herb Merker and Ken Sandine, the members of two UO small groups will be awarded a scholarship. Scholarship recipients are chosen annually in a separate audition prior to the start of Fall term each school year. These groups are open to students of any major. Auditions are held in a group format and judged by a faculty panel. These ensembles, which include JazzArts Oregon, will represent the UO's Jazz Studies Program in concerts throughout the region.

Vocalists and instrumentalists of all sorts are encouraged to audition, especially drums, electric bass, electric guitar, keyboards, and horns.

Students should prepare these two songs, to be played in a rotating group setting:

• "Valerie ['68 Version]" by Amy Winehouse, and
• “Rock With You” by Michael Jackson.

Bring your instruments; we will provide amplifiers and a PA.

The University Opera Ensemble is open to all members of the university community by audition only. All SOMD music majors must have their studio teacher's permission to participate.

AUDITION DETAILS

• Auditions for the February 2027 opera, Idomeneo by Mozart, will take place Thursday, September 24, 2026, from 4:00-7:00 p.m.
• We will also be performing an extensive Opera Scenes Program in May 2027.

WHAT TO PREPARE 

• Please email Dr. Karen Esquivel or Dr. Gustavo Castro for the music if you want to audition for a specific role. 
• If you are interested only in the chorus, you can bring in a Mozart aria.

Auditions required for BMME Choral, BM Voice, BA/BS Applied Study: Voice, MM Voice, MM Choral Conducting, DMA Voice and all voice scholarship recipients.

Instructions:

• Click the sign-up link above.
• On the page The Jury System, select Booking -> Book a Time (you must be logged in with your UO duck id to proceed).
• Fill out the form labeled Jury Booking for the voice studio placements on Friday September 25 in Beall Hall.
• Complete the process by clicking "Submit"

Please plan to present one (1) selection. It can be one of the pieces you sang for your SOMD audition, or something new. Here are some general guidelines:

UNDERGRADUATE: A classical piece in English, Italian, French, Spanish or German. GRADUATE: An art song (Lied, mélodie, etc.), or an aria from an opera or oratorio.

Memorization is required, except for selections from the oratorio repertoire. An accompanist will be provided.

Studio placement auditions are required for all new and returning students who will register for MUP Percussion lessons during the 2026-27 academic year. Studio placement auditions for percussion will coincide with ensemble auditions for that instrument.
