ART 115: SURFACE, SPACE, & TIME

This studio course with a weekly lecture component delivers discursive content relevant to course projects explored in two weekly studio labs. This is a visual literacy course designed as an introduction to art making as a discipline coupled with an exploration of content and form in studio practice . Students develop four primary projects to examine motif, iconography, semiotics, color theory, critical theory, forms of expression, communication, history, and dynamic form and composition. Student projects use a combination of hand building techniques and simple digital medias like video and gif animations to critically explore art practice. Students are asked to bring their own subjectivity and be able to critique work objectively to shape an environment of dialogue in the classroom . This rigorous introductory course is a gateway for art majors as well as an opportunity for non-majors to explore the visual arts.
