Students may be recognized for academic excellence and receive Latin or departmental honors. Honors will be added to students’ transcripts and diplomas when the degrees are conferred.
Latin Honors
Graduating undergraduate students may be eligible to receive Latin honors.
- Latin honors are based on cumulative UO GPA and require students to have completed all degree requirements and have earned at least ninety credits in residence at the University of Oregon.
- Latin honors are computed during graduation processing, before degrees are conferred.
- Post-baccalaureate students are not eligible for Latin honors.
The GPAs for each level of honors are as follows:
- Summa: must be 3.95 or higher
- Magna: must be between 3.85 and 3.94
- Cum: must be between 3.75 and 3.84
Commencement and Latin Honor Cords
The Latin Honor cords eligibility list will be provided to the Duck Store during Week 4 of Spring term. Eligible students may purchase honors cords either online using their UO email address or in person at the Duck Store. Notifications will be sent to eligible students during week 5 of Spring term.
Students eligible to purchase Latin Honor cords include:
- Students who earned Latin Honors with a conferred degree in the Fall or Winter terms preceding Spring Commencement.
- For commencement regalia purposes, students with a Spring degree application will have Latin Honors calculated using their cumulative UO GPA at the end of Winter term. Eligibility for Latin Honor cords and the honors level represented by those cords will not be updated using Spring term grades, even if the grades are posted prior to Commencement.
Departmental Honors
Some academic departments award departmental honors to students who meet specific requirements set by the department. Requirements vary by program. Students should contact their major department directly to inquire about departmental honors requirements. Students seeking department honors will have the requirement added to the audit, Ducks on Track.
