The Tyranny of Metrics (Data and Society Book Club)
October 9–November 6
noon
Knight Library Data Services Help Desk

Are we measuring what actually matters, or just what’s easy to count?

Join Data Services for a sharp, no-nonsense discussion of Jerry Z. Muller’s The Tyranny of Metrics. We’re taking a hard look at "metric fixation", the dangerous belief that everything can and should be quantified.

From higher education to healthcare to corporate management, Muller argues that our obsession with performance indicators, dashboards, and standardized data is actively making our institutions worse. Instead of improving efficiency, it encourages people to game the system rather than do their actual jobs.

What’s on the table:

  • The Trap of Quantification: Why throwing data at a problem often creates a worse one.
  • The Reality Check: A skeptical look at when metrics actually work, and when they fail spectacularly.
  • The Discussion: Bring your frustrations, your insights, and your critiques. Expect an honest, unfiltered conversation about the very real limits of data-driven decision-making.

Open to all students, faculty, and staff. e-book editions are available through the library.

Case Competitions 101
November 6
1:30–3:30 p.m.

Interested in participating in a case competition this year? Case competitions are one of the best ways to build real business skills, stand out to employers, and earn recognition along the way, but participating in your first one can feel intimidating.

This hands-on event breaks down exactly how case competitions work and gives you a repeatable approach you can use to tackle any case with confidence. During this interactive two-hour session, you'll:

  • Work through a real mock case as a team — Move from a messy business problem to a clear, persuasive recommendation.
  • Learn the case competition playbook – Understand the common formats, the loose team roles (team lead, researcher, strategist, quant), and what judges are actually looking for.
  • Work a realistic mock case – Team up to tackle an authentic UO business challenge, scaffolding your approach from understanding the problem to presenting your solution.
  • Practice the full process – Move through the five step process great teams use; understand the problem, research and analyze, develop a hypothesis, build a recommendation, and present clearly.
  • Discover the right tools – Get introduced to the research and analysis tools (from UO Libraries databases to AI tools) that give competitive teams an edge.

November 8
8:00 a.m.

Applications to join Professional Edge Immersions for winter term 2027 are now open!

Looking for a way to gain hands-on experience, explore a potential career path, and connect with professionals in the industry? Professional Edge Immersions are short-term, hands-on experiences that give you the opportunity to work directly with an organization on an applied business challenge. You'll build practical skills, learn more about a particular industry or career area, and make connections with professionals, all while earning a microcredential and gaining experience you can take with you into your future career.

Whether you already have a career path in mind or are still exploring your options, immersions are an opportunity to try something new, build your skills, and see what a career in a particular field could look like.

Offered through the Lundquist College of Business, Professional Edge Immersions are open and FREE to all University of Oregon students, regardless of major. We encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity and share it with anyone who may be interested.

Applications to join these immersions close on Sunday, November 22 at 11:59 p.m.
