Home No Home
This small group project created an installation where the sense and memory of home follows personal objects that people carry with them rather than situate home as a stable certain place. When each object is handled in the space its history is revealed in projections that surround the viewer. From being isolated at home playing video games or tracing a child through refugee camps each story tells a version of home. Over time the narratives blend and overlay creating a palimpsest which give the viewer a sense that there is perhaps more flux than continuity in contriving a notion of home.

This project used surround sound, the game engine Unity and a VR headset (oculus rift) to juxtapoz the idea of home and homelessness. Sitting on a stool the viewer is transported to a downtown Eugene alley. The alley is has a center space that is covered and is a place where Eugene’s homeless sometime go to get out of the rain. Interesting enough the pedestrians on the street appear to give the viewer passing suspicious glances. While their looks might reflect the mix of interest and concerns about the video recording activity going on, it nicely mimics the looks we might be getting if we were homeless people in the alley trying to get out of the rain.

Doorway Vision
This small group project used a doorway to create an interactive that connected the living rooms from sitcoms to those in our own homes. Each time you opened the door you got a different sitcom from a different era. From early on shows like I Love Lucy broadcast into our living rooms affected how we thought about living rooms. A kind of cultural looping of influences. The project seems to invite the viewer in without ever letting them past the threshold —we are left always peering in at living spaces strangely absent of the actors that inhabited them. A space only for reflection.
