As Gradescope rolls out at UO, TEP and UO Online will have regular workshops to help instructors learn about and use Gradescope. We'll keep this page updated with Gradescope-specific events, but also keep an eye on our events page (and faculty/GE newsletters) to find an upcoming workshop.

This page also has a set of three exploration guides to help you learn to use the tools of Gradescope, from setting up a course all the way through grading (student work. The guides help you set up a fake course with fake students, assignments, and submissions for the assignments so that you can explore and experiment freely.

Explore and Learn to use Gradescope

Below are three Exploration Guides which were developed to help faculty and GEs jump right into using Gradescope.  More than just instructions, the guides include questions to consider and settings to experiment with as you get hands-on practice with key features of Gradescope. If you want general instructions for getting going with Gradescope, check out our How to Use Gradescope page.

These three guides are designed to be sequential. 

  1. The first guide helps you create a (fake) Gradescope course with (fake) students. 
  2. The second guide creates (fake) assignments within that course. 
  3. The third guide has you grade (fake) student submissions for those assignments.

After using the guides to learn how to use many features of the Gradescope platform, you can download our one-page instruction guide for integrating Gradescope with Canvas (docx). It gives the four basic actions you'll need when working with Gradescope and Canvas, to connect the two platforms and share student and assignment information between them.

Exploration Guide 1: Creating a Course in Gradescope

This exploration guide will help you explore how to set up a course and upload a student roster as a CSV file (a spreadsheet format). The roster is full of fake students, whose assignments you can upload and grade in later exploration guides.

The guide encourages you to make a fake course to practice using Gradescope. For instructions to set up Gradescope with a real course, see our one-page instruction guide for integrating Gradescope with Canvas (docx)

  • TEP Sample Roster (csv) - note: this links to a OneDrive directory that can only be accessed by UO community members; you will need to sign in with your Duck ID. If you cannot access the directory, please reach out to TEP. This directory also has copies of all three exploration guides and the other files needed for the second guide. 

The sample roster has 25 fake students with fake emails and ID numbers. 

Exploration Guide 2: Making Assignments in Gradescope

This exploration guide will help you explore how to create assignments using the homework/problem set and exam/quiz formats. It includes a template quiz you will build, along with student submissions for that quiz that you can practice uploading student work to Gradescope. 

The exploration guide also includes bonus information for using the homework/problem set assignment format to create an essay or to create a hand-written, in-class reflection activity.

Both the template quiz and student submissions are PDF files, as those are the only files formats that Gradescope currently supports for assignments and uploaded submissions. The student submissions are for students in the sample roster file from the Creating a Course Exploration Guide.

Exploration Guide 3: Grading in Gradescope

This exploration guide will help you explore how to create a grading rubric in Gradescope, use Gradescopes grouping forming tool, and grade student work, including how to use annotation features of Gradescope.

If you are an instructor leading a teaching team, you can use just this guide for training the rest of your team to use Gradescope. Set up (fake) assignments using the first two guides, then have your team members work through just the grading guide to jump start their use of Gradescope.
