Success Overrides All Doubt
New York City is a hub of cultures that are represented in different ways from the art, music, and food throughout the city. I found you can see the representation of cultures most strongly though the different food in the city. I was able to try food i’ve never heard of and experience the culture behind it. Different flavors that tell stories of who people are and where they come from. You can taste the authenticity of the ingredients that blend together that give you a taste of that culture. From Halal, Italian, to Korean I found the culture through the food.

Be Indispensable
We all have our specific focus and expertise when it comes to advertising and that’s great because we concentrate on that and become better at it. But I feel it’s a pain to categorize limit yourself strictly to one description. We have other skills outside of our focus. Explore those and grow them. Don’t limit yourself to your job description. Hybridness: being indispensable is a very cool thing.

Find Your Champion
Sometimes we are too stubborn to open ourselves up to others and take their constructive criticism as form of growth and development. We can’t allow us and others to box ourselves in. We must understand that collaboration is key and learning will only help us become better at what we do and ultimately help reach our goals. Continue to grow and expand your knowledge. Take advice from others with a grain of salt and reach out to that one person who constantly wants to help and see you grow and reach your outmost potential. When you win we all win. Find your champion to help you reach the finish line and beyond.

How Deep Do You Want to Dig?
We all have come to New York to gain and learn experiences that will eventually lead us to where we want to go in our lives and within the advertising industry. But there’s no shortcuts. We must continue to work hard and push our limits, proving to others and most importantly, ourselves, that we want to be great at what we do. Look at it this way: out are building a building. Depending on how big and y’all you want to build that building determines how deep down you have to dig. Digging to form a strong and solid foundation. In order to reach our highest possible height we have to work hard, be relentless and dig deep down to develop our structure so that we can stand strong to prevent ourselves from capsizing. So I ask, how deep do you want to dig?

Noise
There’s a new noise in the air
A noise my ears are unatoned to
A noise undeard of in our small sound
A noise much greater than my hometown
A noise much louder, more diverse, more
Energetic coming from all streets and corners,
Buildings, people and traffic
The city is large and full of opportunity
There’s a noise calling out
Opening my ears saying
Welcome to New York,
Welcome to the land of opportunity

It’s week seven. My mind is on so many things. Did I finish my Spanish homework? Will I have time to hit the gym? Did I even put on deodorant today? With so many things to do and such a short amount of time, I need to remind myself what keeps me grounded. As being apart of the SOJC I have often heard, “Be interested and be interesting.” Finding things to do in my downtime is important. It all circles back to make sure I stay creative and inspired outside of work and school.
Although I feel like sometimes I don’t have time to have a second to take a deep breath, I know that staying busy is something I will always do to push myself to be a better individual.

Affecting Popular Culture
Going in to Saatchi & Saatchi I was excited, interested, but didn’t totally know what to expect. Instantly I was infatuated by their culture, work, and wisdom. They are a large agency but stay true to what they believe in and creating expressive and powerful content that is inspiring. With a motivating agency motto of “Nothing is impossible.” They gave insight to the creative freedom of being a bigger agency and how they can affect the world around us with the quote. “At bigger agencies you have opportunities to change popular culture.” It was an awesome experience to see the thought process on campaigns that have affected culture such the super bowl spot “It’s a tide Ad.”

Strategy is like driving…
This week I had the privilege to hear some of the most insightful advice from brilliant people in the Industry. The quote that resonated with me most this week was from Brian Austin the Associative Creative Strategy Director at Code&Theory. He gave tons of advice that was all filled with wisdom. Yet I will never forget this quote:
“Strategy is like driving, there are no wrong ways, only ways that are less efficient.”
I find this so true and very powerful, as a strategist you can get frustrated and impatient when searching through data for a key insight or trying to find the right audience. This quote seems to give me some clarity on the process of strategy. Sometimes I wonder if I am being intuitive enough or if my process will lead to the right direction. Yet this seems to speak to those questions and reminds me to work hard, think smart, and I will find my way.
