The Landscape of Muslim Philanthropy: An Academic Review of Giving Patterns in the US

Featuring Professor Shariq Siddiqui from Indiana University

Muslim philanthropy represents an important yet understudied dimension of charitable giving in the United States. This talk examines the landscape of Muslim philanthropy through an academic review of giving patterns, exploring how religious beliefs, cultural traditions, and institutional contexts shape Muslim charitable practices. It considers the role of Islamic philanthropic traditions, including zakat (obligatory almsgiving), sadaqah (voluntary charity), and waqf (endowment), alongside contemporary forms of charitable engagement through mosques, Muslim-led nonprofits, and broader philanthropic institutions. By synthesizing existing scholarship, the talk identifies key findings of new research, emerging trends, and gaps in the literature on Muslim American giving. It also considers the implications of these patterns for understanding religious philanthropy, strengthening nonprofit practice, and advancing a more inclusive and comprehensive study of philanthropy in the United States.

Access to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services is a recognized human right and central to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal Six, which targets universal access by 2030. Yet millions living in informal urban settlements—projected to house roughly half the world's urban population by 2050—remain without reliable sanitation infrastructure. This it the first of three-panel discussions, one each quarter of the 26-27 academic year to address to engage with this topic. The discussions will specifically use the example of Container-Based Sanitation (CBS) which emerged in the early 2010’s as a scalable, affordable alternative form of sanitation which, in 2019, the WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme formally recognized as improved sanitation, cementing its role in achieving SDG6.

Panelists:

Clarrissa Brocklehurst: Clarissa Brocklehurst is an affiliated faculty member of the Water Institute at UNC. Clarissa was the Country Representative for WaterAid in Bangladesh, and a Regional Urban Specialist for the World Bank Water and Sanitation Program (WSP) in South Asia. Between 2007 and 2011 she was the Chief of UNICEF’s Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Section, overseeing UNICEF’s water and sanitation programming in 100 countries and playing a role in development of strategy and advocacy for the global water supply and sanitation sector. Clarissa is a member of the Board of Trustees of WaterAid UK and the Strategic Advisory Group of the WHO-UNICEF Joint Monitoring Program that tracks global progress on water and sanitation. She is a Senior Advisor to the global Sanitation and Water for All partnership, and works in a consulting capacity with several sector agencies. 

Nancy Ngao: Nancy is the Government Affairs, Policy & Advocacy Lead at Fresh Life, with extensive experience shaping partnerships, policy, and advocacy to advance sustainable sanitation in Kenya. She has led engagement with government and civil society stakeholders, translating policy and research into actionable strategies. Previously, Nancy worked with 4-H Foundation Kenya, ZanaAfrica, and KikeTele on community development, public health, and youth programs. She holds a BSc in Community Resource Management and Public Health from Kenyatta University.

The Freeman Foundation was created to foster relationships between the US and East Asia, and provides grants and scholarships to students to help drive engagement and create accessible programming. UO has been able to award more than 475 students this scholarship since it was funded, and average award amounts are around $4,000.

Understanding Antisemitism with Project Shema provides a grounding in the history and modern expressions of antisemitism, including how anti-Jewish ideas surface in current conversations about Israel and Palestine. With anti-Jewish hate crimes at record levels in the US, this session helps participants build nuanced understanding, strengthen their ability to identify harm, and respond with empathy and clarity when bias arises.  

Attend this session to hear from UO students who recently won the Gilman Scholarship, an award of up to $5,000 for Pell Grant students to study abroad. UO Gilman alumni will speak about their experiences applying for scholarships, securing funding and managing a budget while abroad, as well as highlights from their academic and cultural experiences participating in GEO study abroad programs and GlobalWorks internships.

Professor Ha will present a talk about his recent book Late Industrialization, Tradition, and Social Change in South Korea (University of Washington Press, 2024). This book is a path-breaking study of how the Korean miracle of industrialization could take place by relying on traditional social structures. Prof. Ha will discuss in particular the phenomenon of "neofamilism" by which the Korean state promoted industrialization by relying on kinship networks to channel capital into chaebol corporations.

Recognizing and Addressing Islamophobia, Anti-Arab, and Anti-Palestinian Bias on Campus with the Intercultural Networks Group offers insight into the identities and lived experiences of Muslim, Arab, and Palestinian community members. As anti-Muslim incidents continue to rise nationally, this workshop equips participants to recognize common tropes and everyday forms of bias, and to take practical, informed action to foster belonging and counter harmful narratives.

Two leaders from a progressive Israeli labor union that organizes Jewish and Palestinian workers in joint unions will visit the University of Oregon for a four-day visit.

The union, "Power of the Workers," will send one Jewish and one Palestinian organizer from their union, who will talk about all of the aspects of organizing unions across those lines.

They will focus in particular on their experience organizing public transportation bus drivers in the Jerusalem area, where occasional anti-Palestinian threats or violence have been met by a series of one-day strikes in which Jewish and Palestinian drivers all stuck together. This isn't a simple kumbaya story, but it's impressive and instructive, and a little bit hopeful in a place where it's hard to find hope.

The speakers will be of interest to a wide range of students — both those interested in labor/economic justice, those interested in Isreal/Palestine, and those interested in organizing across national/ethical/racial lines more broadly.

Hunger is not an accident of nature, but a result of how resources get distributed. The UO Oxfam Hunger Banquet is an immersive event designed to make food distribution impossible to ignore. When you arrive at this event, you draw a card at random, and it will assign you to a high-, middle-, or low-income tier, in proportions drawn from current global inequality statistics. The event meal distribution will go like this: 

• Twenty percent of guests are seated at tables and served a full meal. 
• Thirty percent receive rice and beans. 
• The remaining half sit on the floor with a small portion of rice and water. 

Nobody chooses their tier, and that is the point. After the meal, everyone comes together to talk about what they experienced and what can be done with it. Oxfam has been running Hunger Banquets for more than fifty years, beginning with the 1974 Fast for a World Harvest, when 250,000 people across the United States skipped a meal to take a stand against hunger and inequality. Since then, nearly a million people have attended one of Oxfam's Banquets. 

We are also running a campus-wide food drive. Everything collected goes to the Student Food Pantry. We encourage donations of non-perishable food items, including canned beans, canned proteins (such as tuna), spices, condiments, and holiday foods such as canned cranberry sauce. Other non-perishable food donations are also welcome!

Since 1974, Oxfam has been working with volunteers to create awareness of hunger and inequality. Oxfam Hunger Banquets give you the opportunity to make a difference, both locally and globally. They are volunteer-led interactive events that bring statistics about poverty to life.

RSVP for the event is encouraged but not required.

Learn about our Exploring the Dolomites program, where you get to experience hut-to-hut hiking through tunnels created during WWI, and get acquainted with the magnificent natural landscape.
