The core graduate education research methodology courses serve all graduate students in the COE and provide core content in methodology and statistics to both masters and doctoral level students. Your academic program may offer more specific methodology courses that follow or accompany your EDUC sequence.

Most students begin with an introductory research methods course: EDUC 611 Survey of Educational Research Methods, typically for students earning a terminal master’s degree, or EDUC 612 Social Science and Education Research Design, typically for students who are pursuing or may pursue a doctorate. Both courses introduce quantitative, qualitative, and single-subject research methods. Some programs also require doctoral students to take EDUC 616 Philosophical Foundations of Social Science, which examines the philosophical assumptions behind research methodologies.

Required EDUC courses vary by program. For the courses required in your program, consult your academic advisor and your program’s handbook or course timeline. Before registering for EDUC courses, be sure to check the prerequisites.

The quantitative sequence is unique in that it has two branches: one for consumers of research (i.e., Master’s students pursuing a terminal degree) and the other for producers of research (i.e., PhD and some Master’s students). The consumer branch consists of one prerequisite course and one quantitative methods course. Courses in the producer branch are prerequisites for more advanced quantitative courses offered elsewhere in the COE. When in doubt as to which branch to take, consult with your Program Director and Academic Advisor to be certain.
