While I’m hundreds of miles in the air going much faster than I used to think possible, I have some time to refine my confidence and people skills.

1. Be direct: I need to be friendly, myself, and interesting, but if I don’t take the shot(s) I’m given, this opportunity of a lifetime could be a total waste. Buck up and ask them the burning questions.

2. Do not fangirl (too much): These jobs these people have in New York are going to be mind blowing for my simple, small world to handle. Don’t fawn over these professionals; be a professional YOURSELF.

3. A job is NOT promised: While taking every opportunity at every chance, do not expect a handout nor a guaranteed job to come out of this. Sure, an internship or job would be nice, but this is about networking and seeing what the world of ad is like. Like Nickelback said, “every day is a gift, not a given right.”

4. DON’T LET STRESS RULE THIS TRIP!!

I land in about an hour at 6am EST (3am Oregonian time). The New York coffee better live up to great expectations.
