Restaurant Rule
One of the most genuine and inspiring pieces of advice that I got over this trip was that being an account planner or stepping into any team-oriented role, you had to have waitressing skills. This shocked and intrigued me because I have 1) never heard anyone say this before and 2) have spent my last 6 years working in every type of restaurant known to man. I knew the crazy amount of skills the restaurant profession can bring but needed to know more on why this skill was so important. She went on to say that one of her earlier bosses only hired people with waitressing experience because being a waitress, you need to know how to work with and please so many different people. From maintaining a good relationship with the cook so your food is hot, correct and on time, to not pissing off the bar tender so your drinks aren’t too strong and your customers don’t get too drunk to knowing how to work with the busser so that your customers’ food is cleared and the tables are clean to pleasing the hostess so you get your tables sat and can make good money at the end of the night. Any good waitress knows how to do all of that and knowing how to do that means you have the skill set to work in client and team settings well. This was truly one of the most relevant and eye-opening pieces of advice I’ve ever been given. It also really taught me to look at many of my other life skills for how they can help me in my new career role.
