EUGENE, Ore – Oregon Baseball began a four game series with the University of San Diego Toreros on a much better note than they did a year ago. Last season, the Ducks traveled to La Jolla, CA where they were defeated in three out of the four games in their tangle with the Toreros. However, the Ducks were able to flip the script at home with a narrow 3-2 win on Thursday afternoon at PK Park.

Jace Stoffal got the start on the mound for Oregon and was effective in his five innings of work earning his first win on the young season. The game did not start out ideal for Stoffal and the Ducks as USD left fielder Jack Costello ripped a solo homerun down the left field line to put San Diego on top 1-0 in the first. That would be the only run Stoffal allowed in his outing as he settled down to strike out four batters and only gave up one hit following the homer.

Eugene, OR-- After a sharp opening weekend with Xavier to get the season started, the Ducks followed up with a disappointing sweep in a surprise home series with UC Santa Barbara last weekend. Now Oregon will look to bounce back as they start a four game series against San Diego after dropping out of the latest rankings. On the other hand, the Toreros have been great so far this season and their only loss was to UC Irvine on Monday. San Diego’s success has come mainly from its offense this season as the team has averaged over nine runs per game over this 5-1-1 span. This will easily be one of the toughest tests for an Oregon squad who has struggled to put up runs at times this season.

It’s been a promising start to the season for the Ducks, who sit at 12-3 with 11 wins in their last 12 games. Last weekend’s Mary Nutter classic saw Oregon drop the opener to CSU Fullerton before taking the following four games, including close wins over Northwestern and UC San Diego. Their opponents in the Judi Garman classic include Fresno State, Cal Poly SLO, San Jose State, Loyola Marymount University, and Long Beach state. The Ducks' NCAA Tournament hopes looked all but finished in the closing moments against Oregon State, before Rivaldo Soares rescued them with five points in the final minute. In their last matchup against Cal, the Ducks beat the Bears 87-58 and will look to find a similar result this Thursday in Eugene.

Eugene, OR-- After two straight wins over the Arizona schools at home, Oregon will take on a Washington squad it split the season series with. For both teams, a deep run in the conference tournament will likely be the only way to an NCAA tournament bid. With a loss tonight, one of these teams seasons will be over as the two squads have gone through their fair share of struggles.

Oregon:

It’s been an up and down season for the Ducks as the biggest month of college basketball begins. After a rough stretch for Oregon in which it lost seven straight games, Kelly Graves’ club won two straight games against a tough Arizona team and a struggling Arizona State squad. One of the reasons the Ducks have had a lot of success recently is the re-emergence of Te-Hina Papao who has finally found confidence in her shot again.
