“Botanical Interventions: Rebuilding Landscapes, Reshaping Communities” — Oliver Kellhammer & Jennifer Burns Levin
A Fireside Conversation with Oliver Kellhammer, a permaculture artist, writer, and teacher specializing in ecological restoration and land art, and Jennifer Burns Levin, who teaches literature in the UO Clark Honors College. The two will talk about Kellhammer's interest in the shifting power relationships within public urban spaces and his own work on "botanical interventions," land art that facilitates the healing processes of damaged landscapes and creates opportunities for more productive, mutually beneficial relationships between people and the environment.

2014 CSWS Northwest Women Writers Symposium “Family, Animal, Story”
Our keynote writer is 2014 PEN/Faulkner Award-winner and New York Times–bestselling author Karen Joy Fowler, whose novel We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves has opened up new ways of talking about family dynamics and the ethics of animal research. Saturday’s panels and workshops will meet at Eugene Downtown Public Library. All events are free and open to the public.

Lawyer Wendy Murphy, JD, delivers the 2014 Lorwin Lecture on Civil Rights and Civil Liberties. This keynote lecture focuses on “civil rights violence” and the overt and covert subjugation of violence against women as something other than a civil rights harm. Wendy Murphy specializes in the representation of crime victims, women and children. Her book, And Justice For Some: An Exposé of the Lawyers and Judges Who Let Dangerous Criminals Go Free, was published in 2007.

Racial Representations: African American Literature Since 1975
A group of innovative scholars who specialize in African American literature will gather at the University of Oregon to give talks about their research on April 26, 2013 from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. This free symposium is open to the public and will take place in the Alumni Lounge of Gerlinger Hall, 1468 University Street.
This symposium will include a morning panel moderated by Mark Whalan (U Oregon) and an afternoon panel moderated by Ernesto Martínez (U Oregon). The day will conclude with readings of poetry and creative nonfiction from accomplished authors Evie Shockley and David Bradley.
