Cybersecurity Overview

Cybersecurity is the protection of computing systems and the data they store or access.

It only takes one click to create a cybersecurity incident, which can cause:

• Data breaches causing financial and reputation losses.
• Research at risk.
• Internal disciplinary action(s).
• Embarrassment, such as public social media exposure.

Stay Secure at the UO

• Take the UO Mandatory Cybersecurity Awareness Training.
• Use a UO-issued, managed computer.
• Share links, not files.
• Phishing attacks are very common at the UO. Use caution accessing links in emails.
• Questions? Submit a ticket at Information Security Engagement Request.

Stay Secure Everywhere

• Turn on multifactor authentication (MFA) on each of your accounts. Visit 2fa.directory.
• Use strong, unique passphrases. Don’t reuse passwords.
  • UO provides a password manager for free to everyone: 1Password
• Learn to recognize and report phishing.
• Keep your software and devices up-to-date. Get well-known software directly from the source.

Use one of our two secure networks—eduroam and UO Secure—for your computers, laptops, smartphones, and tablets.

These two networks work the same while you're at the UO. Eduroam also lets you connect to Wi-Fi at thousands of other institutions in the U.S. and around the world.

Microsoft 365 (Office apps)

Free to staff and faculty as long as you’re actively affiliated with the UO. How to get it:

• Online versions: Visit office.uoregon.edu. Available to all UO affiliations.
• Managed UO computers: Office apps already pre-installed.
• Personal and unmanaged devices: Access to Office apps varies by affiliation. Those with A5 licenses can install with these instructions.

Teams calling

UO phone numbers are provided to employees through Microsoft Teams. You can make and receive conventional phone calls through any computer or mobile device. Includes phone conferencing, voicemail, and call transfer features, much like conventional phones.

Copilot Chat—Basic

UO's protected version of Copilot uses the same engines as ChatGPT and DALL-E—but your prompts are encrypted and won't be used to train the AI model.
