Top Honors for Dedicated Mentor and Scholar

Exceptional scholars, professors, and thought leaders advance our understanding of business and society and inspire our students every day at the University of Oregon ’s Lundquist College of Business. And every year, we celebrate and honor one of our faculty members with the Stewart Distinguished Faculty Award. This year, we are pleased to recognize associate professor of accounting Jaewoo Kim as the 2025 Stewart Distinguished Professor.

This prestigious accolade, established through the generosity of alumnus Tom Stewart and his wife Susan, honors faculty members whose accomplishments in research, teaching, and leadership lead to distinction at a world-class level and advance the strategic objectives of the college and the University of Oregon.

Kim’s research output over the past three years has been exceptional. He published six papers in top-tier business journals, including the Journal of Accounting & Economics, Management Science, and The Accounting Review. These journals are among the elite list the University of Texas-Dallas uses in ranking academic productivity at business schools. His work also appears in the Review of Accounting Studies, one of the Financial Times’ top business journals.

Topics that Kim has explored in his recent research include:

• The role of earnings announcements in predicting stock market volatility.
• The influence of macroeconomic expectations on corporate tax planning.
• The challenges companies face in preparing financial statements after SPAC (special purpose acquisition company) mergers.

In addition to his published work, Kim has a robust research pipeline, with four papers invited for resubmission to top-tier journals. And, his dedication to the advancement of knowledge extends to his role as a reviewer, earning him the Excellence in Reviewing Award from the American Accounting Association’s Financial Reporting section.

Beyond research, Kim’s contributions to the Lundquist College community are equally impressive. As the PhD program coordinator for the UO School of Accounting , he has mentored many doctoral students, guiding them through directed readings and co-authoring papers with them. He also introduced a new doctoral seminar to better prepare students for the challenges of academia. This dedication has led to notable successes, including a former student earning a tenure-track faculty position at Georgetown University .
