Be Assertive and Lean In

The panel hosted by FLOCK was one of my favorite parts of the trip. Women in different stages of their lives, careers, and backgrounds told stories about the industry and their journey through it. The panelists were not all from the U of O, which added greater perspective in their advice. It was refreshing to hear experiences from women who were in my shoes not too long ago and it was amazing to hear the takeaways from their careers:

1. Prioritize a work/life balance

2. Sometimes other women will abuse their power

3. Find a community within the workplace

After the panel ended, I asked Molly, an editor at the NY Times to elaborate on her experience with her mentors (or other women in charge) abuse their power and how she overcomes that. She explained that it’s always best to be assertive and pull them to the side to ensure their behavior does not slide or that it does not become a repeated thing.
