The month of May is Mental Health Month— This is a time to shed light on the realities of both living with mental illness and being an advocate for others. 20% of people are affected by mental illness during their lifetime, and there is an increasing number of college students who seek mental health treatment.
As we head to New York, it can be easy to get caught up in the excitement of traveling, visiting astonishing agencies, and making unforgettable memories with your peers. But, at the same time, it is important to take care of yourself both physically and mentally. Many of us are stepping out of our comfort zones to attend this trip. Therefore, it is especially important to pay attention to your body and mind, and take the time to respond to any symptoms should they occur.
On the other hand, everyone on this trip has the ability to serve as an advocate and a support resource. Pay attention to your friends and peers, ask each other how they are doing, and make sure people know they can reach out to you if they ever need help.
The National Alliance on Mental Illness has a list of resources that you can seek if you need care.
