This, my friends, is an enormous neon sign (three times the width and just as tall as myself) reflected off of the tiles of…wait for it…a bathroom wall. Boujie…right? Boujie has become a word used quite frequently throughout this trip thus far and I believe that it perfectly reflects the advertising world. The slang boujie comes from the french word bourgeoisie, which means perceived materialistic values. (This is really definition filled but I promise I’m getting to the point) Boujie can be taken more as a jargon that indicates a fanciful over-the-top attitude. I find that the first thing I care about in agencies is the extraordinary pull from the aura of their beautiful spaces. For a split second, I don’t care about the work and I only imagine my boujie New York lifestyle that my inexperienced mind crafts from my fantasy of working in such a dream space. But that’s the thing, it shouldn’t matter what the interior stylings or vast view of the place I’m working are, yet, that is advertising. It is impressing clients and thinking beyond what others expect. It is going out of the normal realm of comfort to network or be liked. I didn’t realize this going into advertising, and honestly, it does make me a bit sad. However, it is also what makes in the interiors of offices beautiful, the views incredible, giant neon signs in bathrooms, and me excited.
