6 Top Tips to Driving in New York
Since arriving in New York Saturday afternoon, my laziness and pure dread for learning the subway system lead me to taking a couple Uber rides here and there. But, the extra money spent came with some extra knowledge gained. While driving in New York City, our Uber drivers explained that you should use your horn absolutely whenever. Some examples would include:
1. When a bus is switching lanes.
2. When a car hits you because there was a merge and you didn’t let them in.
3. When pedestrians have the right of way.
4. When you are deciding to hit another car or not.
5. When someone is honking at you.
6. And definitely when you are cutting someone else off and they simply aren’t letting you in.
With these top tips I feel entirely more prepared for (not getting run over) in this wild city full of amazing opportunities. I also have decided that now that I have mastered the roads in NY, it is time to master the subway on our trip to Wieden & Kennedy tomorrow morning. I cannot wait for the opportunities this week holds and the doors it may open.

New Frame of Mind
It was a bit of a surreal feeling waking up Saturday morning. To me, New York has always felt slightly unattainable and out of reach. So much of the media we consume centers around this place. It holds with it an endless amount of possibilities and paths for its people to explore.
Although I’ve been to New York before, this trip brings an entirely new frame to see the city through. As I walked around the past two days, I tried to picture myself leaving my apartment and hopping on the subway, living my daily life here. I feel like lucky to be able to visit the city for a week to experience a small sliver of what life in Manhattan could be. I am so ready to soak up every experience.

Big City Little Krissy
A few things I’ve learned on my first day ever in NY:
1. The bagels are AMAZING and apparently equivalent to eating 1/3 loafs of bread…..(buuut can’t stop won’t stop)
2. There are more Dunkin’ Donuts locations than Starbucks
3. New York drivers are insanely good at maneuvering through traffic // barely missing pedestrians // using their horns
4. If you feel rain drops it might just be water mysteriously dripping on you from building air coolers
5. Tiny dogs rule the sidewalks
6. If you’re looking for a fake Gucci belt go to Canal street
7. I can finally reach that unattainable 10,000 step goal just by trying to get to a popular brunch spot
8. The MoMa will not let you bring your $10 green juice from the Juice Bar across the street into the store
9. Private parks (that are only accessible if you live in the building that faces the park) exist
10. I am 90% sure that I’ll eat my weight in food this week
And today is only the first day. Can’t wait to see what’s in store for the rest of the week!
Space
I used to consider advertising to be an industry entrenched in competition, and in some ways, NYC embodies that competitive nature — buildings towering over other buildings, bodies racing to squeeze into Subway cars, hands reaching for that last $2 hot dog. But it’s become so clear to me that advertising is about more than competition or status. It is a massive creative field that really can make space for those who are ready to work hard and invest. And as the first day with UO peers and alumni has shown, that means there’s space for all of us. Because we are here. And because we are ready.

Anticipation
Anticipation- an·tic·i·pa·tion
anˌtisəˈpāSH(ə)n/
noun
- the action of anticipating something; expectation or prediction
Since awaiting this once in a life time opportunity to travel New York and the incredible agency visits, my life seems to have been scheduled around constant preparation and anticipation. I’m fortunate to have visited this magical city once before but nothing compared to what we’re diving into in a few short hours. I can only imagine the powerful knowledge and stimulating creativity stirring among the 112 other members joining this cross-country adventure. I’ve seen those who arrived early and got to stumble upon hidden gems scattered around the city, making me even more exciting for what is to come. Between the incredibly city views, famous foods and memories to be made all I can do is further anticipate what awaits us.

be yourself.
“People want to know YOU, how you think, and your eagerness to learn.” It’s a common piece of advice that I’ve received from professionals in the industry and one that I am going to consistently remind myself about this week.
It’s easy to get overwhelmed and feel like you need to be somebody else, but the right agency or opportunity is going to come your way and you’re going to be grateful you didn’t “fake the funk” to get there.
This opportunity is exciting, overwhelming, but most of all, it’s a great learning experience.
I am ready to go into this week with an open mind and I am curious to see what it has in store.

New York City
Second time back on this trip is like giving myself a second time to see whether or not I like this city. I remembered the first time I was in New York, I first got excited to explore the big city but few days after I felt overwhelmed, I felt struggle to find a sense of belonging when I was in the city with full of people. A year has passed, now I am here again! I still might not enjoy a long and humid subway ride, but I guess I began to adapt to the fast-paced, to see the beautiful and diverse side of New York.

Brem’s Bites: NY Edition
We arrived into New York early in the morning, and having taken the red eye, I was thinking it would be tough to motivate myself to go and explore the city. I could not have been more wrong. Yes… as soon as I got access to my room and I put my head on my pillow I immediately went comatose. But, when we went exploring and I got to see Times Square and Central Park, I was sold. On a day where I wasn’t sure how long I would be able to stay awake, I ended up walking over 11 miles and got to see a good chunk of the city. I didn’t think I would buy in to the vibe of New York City but it really is overwhelming how magical this city is. We haven’t even gotten to see any agencies and I’m already excited for this trip.
I told myself that I would try to eat the best possible food available. So far I have eaten a shrimp roll and some incredible pizza. The pizza had more pepperoni on each slice than I have ever seen. Mark my words, I will be back to this pizza establishment again.
Wide Awake
3:23pm, I land in Newark airport tired as ever, waiting for Jasmine Tran to land an hour after me. My body, polluted with excitement for the unknown that this week entails. The city that never sleeps! Although I have slept twice in the past two days, I still wake up motivated to conquer the city with little funds. I look forward to the wild ride ahead this week, but I am excited for the next avenue I will take and the opportunities that will come.

Welcome to New York!
Currently, Im sitting on an airplane flying across the country to New York City. According to the tv monitor on the seat next to me, we’re about to finish flying over Ohio. Speaking of airplane seats with tv monitors on them, I think this might be the first time I’ve ever flown somewhere on a big enough airline to experience this. Earlier I got a free snack box with cheese, grapes, apples, and a hard boiled egg and it felt like I was living a life of luxury. Suddenly I am a queen, eating grapes and watching I, Tonya (which was very, very good by the way).
My point with this anecdote is that this trip to New York is going to be an incredible experience for me because it will be something entirely new and perspective broadening. I’ve been making jokes about me being a “small town girl taking on the big city,” but there’s definitely some truth to it.
If I haven’t made it clear, I have never been to New York. I used to be entirely against the idea of New York because I thought it seemed too big, too loud, too… much. But I’ve recently opened up to the idea. Im sure a part of this is me doing some good ol fashioned romanticizing of the city, but I suppose we’ll see soon.
I’m excited for this trip. I’m excited to experience a new city and a new type of culture. I’m excited to get to know the 112 other students who are also traveling there better.
However, Im also incredibly nervous about aspects of this trip. Like trying to navigate the subway and hailing a cab and generally any aspect of navigating the city, since I notorious among my friends for having no sense of direction.
We’re about to land at JFK. I’ve been writing this blog post very slowly. But, here we go. The adventure begins!
