Photo Show
I am learning more and more all that this city has to offer. Around each corner has been a new discovery, small and big. Yesterday I found myself at a photo show displaying photos taken in the late 80s and early 90s that are just now, roughly forty years later, being developed. Some of the people in the photos attended the showing now in their old age and were viewing themselves at 18 years old. This is just one of many interesting things happening in New York.

Inspiration. For me it is this weird feeling that sometimes alludes you for days, weeks, or months. Then there are other times where it just hits you like a bus and you are paralyzed for a moment by it. That’s what New York has done to me. It’s has hit me like a 3 ton bus and I find myself looking around with bigs eyes and a shiver down my back. It’s crazy isn’t it? Who knew a change of scenery can change your perspective?

Pay attention to questions and the answers given in response. Listen to understand not only what people are saying but more importantly what people are implying. The distance between surface level understanding of others’ perspectives and insight into their motivations and observations is crossed through curiosity and reflection.

I don’t know
Ah yes, the infamous question “what are you doing after you graduate” and my favorite answer, “I don’t know.” It seems as though college students get into our minds that a job immediately after college is so essential in some twisted way, as though we must be shoved into the world following a certain path. This trip I have listened to many people’s stories about how they got to NY and where they are now. Every single person got here a different way, with or without a job, and is nowhere close to where they thought they would be. Being patient is easier said than done but, I know that at some point my answer will turn from “I don’t know” to “I know!” and then back to “I don’t know.” There is no one clear way to go about life after college and that openness has given me peace of mind to hustle and find my own way. What is meant to be, will be.

Beautiful Chaos
The two words I use to describe New York City: beautiful chaos. Amidst the hustle and bustle of the city are these incredible moments where you stop and smell the subway, i mean roses, and are in total bliss. Beautiful chaos.

Blisters
Today I counted 19 blisters on my feet. In the span of one week. The streets of NYC (and work flats/heels) have put my feet through the ringer. Although my feet are screaming stop, I strap on my shoes and walk out the door each day excited for where I will end up next. New York does not have sympathy for my aching feet so neither do I. It’s tough love here but in the best way. Every person around me has such a unique story. All coming from different walks of life into the same city of dreams, to walk until we can’t walk anymore, and then keep walking. “Put your feet on the ground” in all meanings of the phrase and go.

New York City is all about the hustle. I’ve learned from being here in our past few days that if you don’t have it, New York won’t be the place for you. Hustle works in so many ways throughout this industry. Hustle with innovative technology through brand development. Hustle for your client in order to present the best content and strategic planning. I have seen some extremely impressive pieces of work that prove teams individual and collective hustle. I have been especially impressed with the amount of hustle from all of the talented Oregon alumni we have been able to reconnect with. The 72 & Sunny Alumni event proved that great hustle in this city paired with consistent and strong networking can pay off when putting yourself out there and getting your foot in the door. Hustle drives motivation and without it, none of us would be where we have gotten today.
