Wieden 2.0

After being on the New York trip for the second year in a row. I was quite interested to see if anything had changed a year later. I was very impressed to see the testimonial sizzle reel over the traditional sizzle reel that a majority of the agencies put out. I also enjoyed the HQ game that was played, even though it had a couple of glitches, it was a simple to get someone’s portfolio reviewed. Overall, amazing work and I can’t wait to be back next year!

New York is something special. You hear the stories and you see the pictures, but you don’t really understand until you’re there.

It feels like a movie. The views are indescribable. It’s something that only a pair of eyes can do justice. Being there makes you feel like you’re working towards a hidden goal that you can feel in your heart but haven’t been able to bring it to life.

It is truly an experience.

Brem’s Bites: The Best for Last

I was trying to think of when my meals hit their stride on this trip but I think I hit it as soon as I got off the plane. From Japanese beef curry burritos to Chinese savory crepes, I got a wide array of delicious Asian food in the Urban Space near our hotel. I had to fight every urge not to be lazy and just get something new at the Urban Space, and it became even more difficult to motivate myself to explore other food options when I discovered the lasagna pizza around the corner from the Roosevelt. But guess what? Those don’t take the cake.

It wasn’t until the fateful Friday afternoon where I went out with Scotty and he suggested empanadas. It wasn’t what I had pictured eating but sounded good enough. We found Empanada Mama in Hell’s Kitchen and made our way there. We each order four large empanadas and oh my goodness. These empanadas were to die for. Each one was so different and so delicious at the same time. I was so stuffed after, and yet, all I wanted was more empanadas. One of my last meals and I went out with a bang.

find your niche

Non traditional skills are essential, especially as a producer.  Producers in the industry encouraged us to learn color grading, audio editing, cinema 4d, sketch, these unique skills setting us apart from the majority of video shooting and editing producers.  

Additionally, practice the type of work that you want to make.  People are going to give you opportunities based on what you can do previously.  To open new doors, do passion projects that expand your genres of production.

Be unique.  Do things other people aren’t.  If everyone is using squarespace use six.  If everyone is producing travel videos, animate a travel video.  Take the time to curate your own vibe, that sets you apart from the pack.  Be yourself in your copy, present your work differently.  The hardest part of selling yourself, is being the most authentic version of yourself.

Languages! Languages Everywhere?!?

Overkill? Yes. Still overwhelming? Also yes.

I am still in shock of how many languages I heard walking around the city. Coming from around Los Angeles, I thought I grew up hearing a wide range of languages… boy was I wrong. One of my favorite moments of the trip was standing in Times Square, just listening to how many different languages are all within ear shot. None of them took any notice (obviously), but it was a moment that I enjoyed and I don’t think I will forget.

-Learn how to learn (things fast).

-Act into thinking (don’t think into acting).

-Production companies can work with conflicting clients.

-Medium depends on the size of audience.

-Only outsource if someone can do it better than you.

-Admit what you don’t know.

-Be important to yourself first.

-Solve a problem then get seen.

Grown up.

Being able to navigate New York on my own was a feeling and ability I will never forget. I felt overwhelmed and grounded all at the same time. I have never felt more confidently independent and comfortable in my own skin, than when I was sitting on the subway on my way to my next agency visit with my headphones in and music bumping.

Words aren’t enough to describe how grateful I am to have experienced New York for the first time the way that I did. I feel more than ready to take on senior year and whatever comes next—hopefully, New York is somewhere in my future.

Vincent Van Gogh

I’m a huge fan.

An incredible post-impressionist, with so many creative ideas and thoughts. 

Van Gogh’s Starry Night night has been the background on my phone for months now. Why? Well first off, its beautiful. But the real reason is because it reminds me of the creativity that is able exist in art.

People think of Van Gogh as being a little mad, a little crazy. I think that’s okay. If being a little mad or crazy can give you the ability to create masterpieces, then I’m okay with being a little mad or crazy.

I visited the MoMa today and was able to bask in the beautiful pieces for a few hours. Wandering aimlessly, I ended up in the post-impressionist era room. This is what I found.

I was lucky enough to see this beautiful work with my own two eyes. In New York City. The piece that inspires me to think freely and be an individualist.

Take Aways

The most common thing I heard between all of the agencies I visited had to do with inspiration, and how it’s found in the strangest places. The most important thing we can do is continue to live full and happy lives outside of work, in order to always have fresh new Ideas. If all we do is advertising then eventually we’ll become dull, you’re never too busy for a new hobby. Your best ideas won’t come from the office, they’ll come from your random experiences on your way there. So make them interesting.

The Flock event at Horizon was something I’ll always cherish for many reasons. First and foremost, it was extremely beneficial to find more ways to support and be an ally for women, especially in the workplace. It was inspiring to see such a large group of people working together to better themselves. The panel advised us that if we were going to make a mistake, to “fail upwards” by learning how to improve from our actions.

After the panel, I had a chance to catch up with my friend Casey, who recently graduated from the advertising program and is currently working at Horizon. She took me on a tour of the office that ended at the rooftop deck, and it was exhilarating to see the city from above. I couldn’t believe that Casey experienced this on a daily basis. It made me even more eager to find a way to move to New York.
