I have come to a realization.
There really isn’t a good seat on a plane. Here is my reasoning for why. FIRST, you have the window seat sitter. It seems like an incredible investment. You get the view, you get an arm and head rest… What more could you want? Oh but wait– did you consider the fact that you are the absolute most annoying person in your row when you have to go to the bathroom? You better be ready to hold that bladder! SECOND, the middle seat sitter. First thing’s first– you better make sure you have a pack of gum because once you yawn, that breath is traveling in all directions… (don’t be that unpleasant mouth breather no one wants to sit next to either). On top of this, you get the luxury of having two arm rests AND two shoulders to rest on potentially… That is, if the people you are sitting in between like you, so MAKE IT COUNT!! And Lastly, the aisle seat AKA what I experienced on the journey to NYC today. Here’s a tip, don’t expect to get a good little nap in– it won’t happen. The flight attendants will continuously bump into you with their carts and startle you out of your deep, 2 seconds of great slumber, and if your feet are .0000094532 centimeters in the walkway, you can guarantee your toes will be trampled so, enjoy!

Women of Flock…
I can not say thank you enough! From the handwritten notes tucked in our journals to the amazing advice and reassurance given to us women entering this competitive workforce and city, it was amazing. The biggest piece of advice I took away from the meeting was to see my summer internship as runway that I won’t be on for long. While I am on this short runway I’ll be working hard and fast, absorbing and learning everything and will be saving every penny. But once I get to the end, it’ll be time to take off and fly.
Knowing that I’ll have this authentic, reliable, and wonderful support system in a place that feels so big is so reassuring and I can’t wait to hit the ground running!

As I left to Portland from Eugene I was extremely late and somehow managed to not miss my flight. I felt very excited to begin this journey in a city I had never experienced before. Upon my arrival I loved how fast paced the city felt and the views walking around SOHO were second to none. My first food experience in New York was one of the best dinners I had every had. We went to downtown Manhattan to a small place called Thursday’s that had the best edamame dumplings. I cannot wait to explore the city more this week and take photos of everything in sight.

I can’t stress enough how incredible of a resource Linkedin is. It’s funny to think about how social media platforms like Twitter and Instagram allows us to follow and interact with our favorite celebrities, influencers, etc. Linkedin, on the other hand, can connect you to your future coworker, professional mentor, or even employer! Upgrade to premium (I know paying $30 a month for it may suck, but think of it as an investment). Utilize every aspect that premium has to offer. Do my favorite thing - slide into people’s dms. Do your research. Introduce yourself. Ask if they are willing to share how they got to where they are now. Put yourself out there because you have nothing to lose. If they don’t, it is what it is! If they respond, who knows what door that can open. Because of Linkedin, I was able to connect with a UO alum who happens to be an art director at one of my favorite cosmetics companies in NYC. Because of one message, I now have plans to meet with her while I’m in the city. SHOOT YOUR SHOT BABY. You got nothing to lose.

Today I think I found a top contender for my favorite place in NY.
A place of re-purpose and beauty, High Line is a perfect example of how movement is created through design. A once important freight train railroad track in the 1930′s has now been re-imagined to be a space of art and life. The park offers a scenic walk where you can get all the great views of Manhattan and the Hudson River.
With all the marvelous pieces of architecture that we come across in our visit, it’s easy to forget all the details that go into the planning and design of these amazing structures. So, next time you come by a piece of architecture you find interesting, think about its design and what purposes it serves. You may find a new meaning of appreciation for it.

3-2-1 Takeoff
What an incredible amount of human brain power and natural resource power it takes to get is to get us all safely to this magical city. Flying across the country is no easy task for us as passengers, for the pilots and crew, or for the plane. Taking off and rising up above 30,000 feet in the air, I could feel all the power being used to thrust this giant piece of metal into the air. Prior to this trip, I had not thought about the carbon impact a journey like this has on the environment. As students transitioning to professionals within the world, it is our responsibility to take care of the earth and reduce our carbon impact in the most efficient ways possible both in our personal lives and in our careers. After learning about carbon offsets, it gave me hope for our future on this earth and I hope we can all learn how to take care of it before it’s too late.

Elevator pitch
As I prepare for our agency visits I have been thinking about my elevator pitch. A good pitch should only last the 20 second elevator ride and be no more than two sentences while letting people know who you are and what your goals are. You may want to have several versions of your pitch so you can tailor it based on who you are talking to. It is important to speak to the person you are talking to and to not sound overly rehearsed or ramble on. Most of all though, be yourself and don’t try to overly impress people. One thing I have realized is people in this industry appreciate authenticity. If you can create a powerful elevator pitch that makes you stand out, then you win.

With the departure of our flights quickly approaching a common theme among my peers was readiness. The process to get ready for and feel confidently prepared for this amazing experience is daunting, but one we took on with excitement. With research under our belt for the agency visits to come, resumes polished and suitcases stuffed at the last minute we are ready to embark on our journey to experience all New York has to offer for the week.

It’s happening
As ad week approaches, I realized I was treating it as something that was happening far into the future and I had plenty of time, but as each week passed, I realized it was finally happening. When the schedule came out of each agency that we are going to, it became very real and I was going to do have to do my research on these places. As I learned information about these agencies, I have become eager to see them come to life. It is one thing to read and see what they are about online, but being immersed in their culture and environment is something completely different. Of course, I’m intrigued to meet new people and make connections, but I’m also anxious to see if I could actually see myself working in one of these places, or even in this city.

Stories
I took this photo in New York 1.5 years ago. I look back on it quite a bit. It reminds me of why street photography is amazing, especially in a place like NY. So many different life stories are in this picture. I sometimes look at one of the individuals in it and try to picture (pun intended) what their life has been. What they are into, what they’ve gone through, and what they do for a living. Not because I’m a stalker, but because I love knowing people’s stories and understanding where they come from.

At this very moment (April 4th, 6:40pm), myself and four other students going to New York found out our flight to Seattle was delayed 2 hours, meaning we wouldn’t make our connecting flights. We booked a later flight, but our flight got delayed again. So we had to book an even later flight. AGAIN. Not the best start to the trip.
