At the Craft Center, we are embarking on a new series. The Crafting Cultures Series is a collaboration between the Craft Center and UO Peace Corps Program that combines hands-on making with cultural storytelling. Each term, workshop participants will explore a different Peace Corps country through a traditional craft while hearing firsthand experiences from Returned Peace Corps Volunteers and guests connected to the featured culture. Through creative practice and conversation, participants gain new perspectives, discover global traditions, and build cross-cultural connections. Whether you're interested in learning a new craft, exploring cultural exchange, or connecting with others, this welcoming series offers a space for creativity, community, and global learning.

For Fall term, discover the vibrant world of indigo dyeing, a textile tradition deeply rooted in West African culture. In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn basic indigo vat-dyeing techniques and create their own dyed textile. In addition, the workshop will feature two guests to talk about the Senegal experience:

Janelle Christensen, UO Campus Peace Corps Recruiter, is a Returned Peace Corps volunteer. She served in Senegal will share stories, photographs, and insights from her experiences living and working abroad.

Jean Faye, Assistant Teaching Professor of Natural Sciences at Clark Honors College was born and raised in Senegal and will provide additional cultural perspectives and discuss contemporary Senegalese traditions, art, and daily life.

Together, they will offer participants a rich and engaging look at Senegalese culture through both personal experiences and local perspectives. And you will walk away with a beautiful indigo dyed fabric tote bag.
