{"id":147,"date":"2011-03-31T12:24:02","date_gmt":"2011-03-31T19:24:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/games2teach.wordpress.com\/?p=147"},"modified":"2020-07-02T17:36:14","modified_gmt":"2020-07-02T17:36:14","slug":"aaal-2011-passionate-affinity-spaces-g2t","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/games2teach.uoregon.edu\/2011\/03\/31\/aaal-2011-passionate-affinity-spaces-g2t\/","title":{"rendered":"AAAL 2011, Passionate Affinity Spaces &amp; G2T"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jon and I just returned from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aaal.org\">AAAL 2011<\/a> in Chicago and were excited to hear James Paul Gee present his keynote address on what he calls \u201cpassionate affinity spaces.\u201d\u00a0 Basically, he refers to the online (and offline) contexts in which people come together to engage in complex tasks and discourse(s) related to various types of pop culture media such as video games and fan fiction.\u00a0 He cited a number of relevant examples such as simulations utilizing <a href=\"http:\/\/thesims.ea.com\/\">the SIMS<\/a> and teen fan fiction.<\/p>\n<p>Most relevant to the work we are doing in the Games to Teach project was the focus on players\u2019 intense involvement with communities engaged in similar activities.\u00a0 This is an especially rich source of interaction for language learners to address pragmatic and strategic abilities with a variety of languages.\u00a0 As part of the G2T project we are presenting on, and writing about, ways in which instructors can utilize digital games and their associated communities to build literacy skills and assist in L2 learning.\u00a0 This includes analysis of existing communities and eventual participation in these \u201cpassionate affinity spaces,\u201d as well as the use of in-game interaction.\u00a0 We were excited to see Jim\u2019s talk on the AAAL program and look forward to talking more about these issues as related to L2TL on this blog and throughout the G2T project!\u00a0 We will be talking more about this at our upcoming <a href=\"http:\/\/cercll.arizona.edu\/doku.php\/\/development\/workshops\">CERCLL workshop (May 31 \u2013 June 1)<\/a>.
