But the [co-editor] of <em>Global Bollywood<\/em> says it goes beyond that. \u2018On one level they are  utterly commercial, but they also probe themes &#8230; that are incredibly  resonant in societies battling between tradition and modernity\u2019 \u2013 themes  such as class, family, and interreligious conflict. \u2018These films often  take up the question of how to live with people who are different from  you.\u2019&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Gopal is a CSWS faculty affiliate. Her book <a title=\"book synopsis\" href=\"http:\/\/www.press.uchicago.edu\/ucp\/books\/book\/chicago\/C\/bo12120811.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Conjugatons: Marriage and Form in New Bollywood Cinema<\/em><\/a>, is due out in fall 2011 from the University of Chicago Press.
