The symposium was held Monday, February 28, 2011. Dr. Vandana Shiva, the 2011 Wayne Morse Chair of Law and Politics, served as moderator. The panelists were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/web.pdx.edu\/%7Eb5mg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Michele Gamburd<\/a>,   Professor, Anthropology Department, Portland State University, \u201cSri   Lankan Migrant Workers: Obstacles and Challenges to Activism\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/sociology.uoregon.edu\/profile\/otis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eileen Otis<\/a>,   Assistant Professor, Department of Sociology, University of Oregon,   \u201cFrom Masters to Servers: The Emergence and Struggles of China&#8217;s   Feminized Service Workforce\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Guadalupe Quinn, Immigrant Rights Advocacy Program Coordinator (Amigos), \u201cImmigrant Women Workers In Oregon\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Abby Solomon, Homecare Coordinator, Service Employees\u2019 International Union (SEIU), \u201cWomen Healthcare Workers in Oregon\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In her closing remarks, Dr. Shiva mentioned that the encroachment of corporations into the lives of ordinary people diminished our ability to organize around labor rights. Dr Shiva said, \u201cI am always surprised when I hear that something that is nice and shiny can cost a dollar. Market deregulation, corporate greed, and lack of \u00a0safeguards for working people are the central features of the breakdown in unions and worker&#8217;s rights, whether it be in the United States or in China or in Sri Lanka. The key then is not to think of ourselves separated by national boundaries or by citizenship status, but to think of our labor as an intrinsic human right.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014Dr. Lamia Karim, CSWS Associate Director<\/p>\n<h6>A Lorwin Event<\/h6>\n<p>This symposium was part of the Center for the Study of Women in Society\u2019s \u201cWomen\u2019s Rights in a Global World,\u201d the 2010-11 inaugural series of the Lorwin Lectureship on Civil Rights and Civil Liberties. This yearlong series of lectures, symposia, workshops, and other events focuses on the continuing struggles for women\u2019s rights and is intended to inspire new scholarship and activism on women\u2019s rights. It grows out of CSWS\u2019s historical mission: to generate research on women and gender and to disseminate that research to a broader feminist community.
