{"id":31667,"date":"2020-04-14T17:16:29","date_gmt":"2020-04-15T00:16:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/csws.uoregon.edu\/?p=31667"},"modified":"2021-01-13T09:37:03","modified_gmt":"2021-01-13T17:37:03","slug":"research-grants-2020-21","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/csws-archive.uoregon.edu\/research-grants-2020-21\/","title":{"rendered":"CSWS announces research grant awardees for AY 2020-21"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Center for the Study of Women in Society (CSWS) is pleased to announce awards of more than $86,000 for scholarship, research, and creative work on women and gender for AY 2020-21.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A total of 22 grants were awarded to 12 graduate students, seven tenure-track faculty members, and one career faculty member. Moreover, given the ongoing coronavirus crisis, the Center is extending flexibility in the grant funding period so that researchers may conduct their project fieldwork and travel when conditions permit.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CSWS Director Michelle McKinley said she was pleased that four of the faculty awardees had research projects that qualified for funding from the Center\u2019s Mazie Giustina Endowment for Research on Women in the Northwest.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor many years the Giustina fund was underutilized,\u201d McKinley said. \u201cIt\u2019s important that Center-supported research is drawing attention to the position of women in the Pacific Northwest.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the regional faculty projects supported by the Giustina fund is the second phase of the Eugene Lesbian Oral History Project by Judith Raiskin, Women\u2019s, Gender and Sexuality Studies.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\r\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-29444\" src=\"https:\/\/csws-archive.uoregon.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/lesbian_history_1_raiskin_long.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"331\" height=\"186\" srcset=\"https:\/\/csws-archive.uoregon.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/lesbian_history_1_raiskin_long.jpg 800w, https:\/\/csws-archive.uoregon.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/lesbian_history_1_raiskin_long-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/csws-archive.uoregon.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/lesbian_history_1_raiskin_long-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/csws-archive.uoregon.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/lesbian_history_1_raiskin_long-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/csws-archive.uoregon.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/lesbian_history_1_raiskin_long-560x315.jpg 560w, https:\/\/csws-archive.uoregon.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/lesbian_history_1_raiskin_long-260x146.jpg 260w, https:\/\/csws-archive.uoregon.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/lesbian_history_1_raiskin_long-160x90.jpg 160w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 331px) 100vw, 331px\" \/>\r\n<figcaption>Judith Raiskin (l) and Linda Long<\/figcaption>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2018, Raiskin and Linda Long, curator of manuscripts in Special Collections and University Archives in UO Libraries, began conducting video interviews and archiving documents from more than 140 women participating in the oral history project. In the projects second phase, Raiskin will be developing a website for students, educators, and the public to access the archived materials.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other faculty projects supported by the Giustina fund include research on native women\u2019s story circles by Theresa May, Theater Arts; an award-winning Russian-born Oregon author by Jenifer Presto, Comparative Literature and Russian Studies; and impacts of Oregon\u2019s 2017 Fair Scheduling legislation by Ellen Scott, Sociology.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In graduate student research awards, Cristina Faiver-Serna, PhD candidate in geography, was unanimously&nbsp;selected as the next Jane Grant Dissertation award holder for her project, \u201cGeographies of Environmental Racism and the M(other)work of <em>Promotoras de Salud<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Faiver-Serna\u2019s project abstract, \u201c<em>Promotoras de salud<\/em> (community health workers) are central to a public health model of care that addresses asthma in Southern California\u2019s Latinx communities.\u201d Drawing from environmental justice frameworks, Faiver-Serna critically analyzes the care-work of <em>promotoras<\/em> and \u201chow it operates to (de)construct geographies of environmental racism.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Jane Grant Dissertation awardee receives an $18,000 stipend and UO student health insurance for the academic year. In addition, in partnership with the dean, the Graduate School provides tuition remission for the academic year.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CSWS has awarded the Jane Grant Fellowship to graduate students at the University of Oregon since 1983. This highly competitive dissertation award supports projects from a range of disciplines on topics related to women and gender.
