\u201cThe\n biggest inspirations for my career have been the resilient, creative, \nand generous Guatemalan women I have met through my research,\u201d said Erin Beck<\/a>, associate professor of political science<\/a> in the College of Arts and Sciences<\/a>. \u201cLearning\n from them has pushed me to do research that honors their expertise and \ntheir efforts to create a more just society\u2014oftentimes in quite \ndifficult circumstances.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recently awarded a grant from the Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation<\/a>\n with her coauthor, Beck conducts research on international development \nand violence against women; she is especially interested in how gender, \nrace, and class considerations intersect. In her analysis of indigenous \nGuatemalan women\u2019s experiences of gendered violence, she finds that they\n are inadequately served by interventions that do not also account for \nclass, place, or ethnic-based inequalities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When it comes to \nteaching, Beck asserts \u201cPassion is contagious! I find that showing \nstudents why I get excited about the topics I am teaching\u2014and spelling \nout how seemingly abstract ideas and policies affect real people in \nmeaningful ways\u2014motivates students to dig deeper.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to\n her academic work, Beck is on the board of a local dog rescue and \nregularly serves as an expert witness in asylum cases for Guatemalans \nfleeing conditions of violence in their home country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
