In 2020, Pornhub is being sued\nfor a lack of closed captioning by a deaf user. Most of the discourse on the\nnewly formed Closed Caption category has been relegated to mainstream internet outlets\npositioning the CC feature as an oddity, a marketing tactic, or a joke. These\noutlets\u2019 jokes regarding the use of CC are built upon the infantilization of\npeople with disabilities and a narrow focus on how pleasure is experienced. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/csws.uoregon.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Reeb-web.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-31427\" width=\"233\" height=\"293\" srcset=\"https:\/\/csws-archive.uoregon.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Reeb-web.jpg 450w, https:\/\/csws-archive.uoregon.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Reeb-web-239x300.jpg 239w, https:\/\/csws-archive.uoregon.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Reeb-web-119x150.jpg 119w, https:\/\/csws-archive.uoregon.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Reeb-web-260x326.jpg 260w, https:\/\/csws-archive.uoregon.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Reeb-web-160x201.jpg 160w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 233px) 100vw, 233px\" \/><figcaption>Celeste Reeb<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this talk, English PhD student\nCeleste Reeb examines the Pornhub CC archive to understand how it helps to\nconstruct and normalize certain pleasures over others while offering ways to\nchallenge dominant discourses of pleasure. Captioning is an important factor in\npleasure which requires rethinking who watches porn and where pleasure is\nfound. This talk uses feminist disability frameworks to examine CC for\npornographic media and investigates the labor performed by female actresses,\nthe way pleasure is derived from online pornography, the rhetoric surrounding\ndisability and pleasure, and what bodies are presumed to experience pleasure.
