On Jan.\n30, Philosophy graduate student Jane Nam will present a noon talk entitled, \u201cEscape\nthe Corset: Radical Korean Feminism.\u201d Nam received a 2019-20 graduate student\nresearch award for her work from the Center for the Study of Women in Society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

South\nKorea is often deemed the beauty capital of the world, as the cosmetic surgery\nhub and home to one of the largest beauty industries in the world. The faces of\nfemale K-pop idols and K-drama celebrities have come to symbolize the K-beauty\nstandard: perfection. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beginning\nin the summer of 2018, however, young Korean women began posting pictures of\nthemselves on social media, with shaved heads, androgynous clothing, and\nsmashed makeup products. \u201cWhy do I want to be pretty?\u201d \u201cDo I want to be pretty?\u201d\nThese are the questions young women are asking themselves as they partake in\nwhat they call, the Escape-the-Corset Movement, or Tal-Corset (in Korean). The\ngoal? Freedom to be human, and not \u201cwoman.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nam connected with over fifty women following the #escapethecorset movement. Her research brings to light, the strength, intelligence, and courage of Korean women who have demonstrated not just their potential but also a capacity for activism through concrete acts of feminism. The talk will be held 12-1:30 p.m. in the CSWS Jane Grant Room, 330 Hendricks Hall, 1408 University Street.
