Komagata Maru<\/em>&nbsp;left Hong Kong for Vancouver carrying 376 Punjabi migrants. Chartered by railway contractor Gurdit Singh, the ship and its passengers were denied entry into Canada and eventually deported to Calcutta. In&nbsp;<em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dukeupress.edu\/across-oceans-of-law\" target=\"_blank\">Across Oceans of Law<\/a><\/em> (Duke University Press, 2018), Renisa Mawani retells this well-known story of the&nbsp;<em>Komagata Maru.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/csws-archive.uoregon.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Mawani.Headshot1.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-30846\" width=\"217\" height=\"171\"\/><figcaption>Renisa Mawani<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Drawing on what she terms \u201coceans as method\u201d\u2014 a mode of thinking and writing that repositions land and sea\u2014Mawani&nbsp;places the Pacific, Indian, and Atlantic Oceans into conversation to track the circulating legalities that connected the Dominions, colonies, and territories; the shifting intensities of racial, colonial, and legal violence that joined indigenous dispossession, transatlantic slavery, and Indian indenture to so-called \u201cfree\u201d migration; and the transoceanic repertoires of anticolonial critique that challenged the empire\u2019s underlying racial, spatial, and temporal divides.
