{"id":30796,"date":"2020-03-02T10:27:01","date_gmt":"2020-03-02T18:27:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/csws.uoregon.edu\/?p=30796"},"modified":"2021-01-13T09:37:23","modified_gmt":"2021-01-13T17:37:23","slug":"queer-studies-lecture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/csws-archive.uoregon.edu\/queer-studies-lecture\/","title":{"rendered":"Postponed: Lawrence La Fountain-Stokes Queer Studies Lecture"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Note: This event will be rescheduled for AY 2020-21.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Queer Studies Lecture<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cTranslocas: The Politics of Puerto Rican Drag and Trans Performance\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Lawrence La Fountain-Stokes (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/lsa.umich.edu\/rll\/people\/faculty\/lawrlafo.html\" target=\"_blank\">Lawrence La Fountain-Stokes<\/a> <br>Associate Professor of Spanish, University of Michigan&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/csws-archive.uoregon.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Stokes.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-30797\" width=\"175\" height=\"263\"\/><figcaption>Lawrence La Fountain-Stokes<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lawrence La Fountain-Stokes lists his main research interests as queer\/LGBT Hispanic Caribbean (Cuban,  Dominican, Puerto Rican) studies, U.S. Latina\/o, and Latin American  literary, cultural, and performance studies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his first book,&nbsp;<em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.upress.umn.edu\/book-division\/books\/queer-ricans\" target=\"_blank\">Queer Ricans: Cultures and Sexualities in the Diaspora<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;(University  of Minnesota Press, 2009), he analyzes portrayals of migration, sexual  diversity, and gender nonconformity in Puerto Rican cultural productions  (such as cartoons, dance theater, film, literature, and performance  art) both on the island and in the United States, focusing on the lives  and work of artists such as Luis Rafael S\u00e1nchez, Manuel Ramos Otero, Luz  Mar\u00eda Umpierre, Frances Negr\u00f3n-Muntaner, Rose Troche, Erika L\u00f3pez,  Arthur Avil\u00e9s, and Elizabeth Marrero. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his new book project,&nbsp;<em>Translocas and Transmachas: Trans Diasporic Puerto Rican Drag<\/em>,  he focuses on migration, transvestism, and performance and argue that drag  can serve not only to question gender and sexuality but also to explore  commodification, cyberspace, diasporic displacements and reenactments  of home, ethnicity, the human\/animal divide, monstrosity, politics,  poverty, race, and racial passing. Here he discusses the lives and work of  artists and activists such as Eduardo Alegr\u00eda, Javier Cardona, Lady  Catiria, Fausto Fern\u00f3s, Erika L\u00f3pez, Elizabeth Marrero, Freddie Mercado,  Jorge Merced, Mario M\u00f3ntez, Sylvia Rivera, and Holly Woodlawn, as well  as the recent phenomenon of Puerto Rican participation in&nbsp;<em>RuPaul\u2019s Drag Race<\/em>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Note: This event will be rescheduled for AY 2020-21.
