Miriam Abelson returns to the University of Oregon for a colloquium, with a panel of commentators, to discuss her forthcoming book, Men in Place: Trans Masculinity, Race, and Sexuality in America<\/a><\/em>, due out in March from the University of Minnesota Press. This book is based on her PhD research. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Miriam Abelson<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Abelson is an assistant professor in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Portland State University. She received her PhD in sociology and a certificate in women\u2019s and gender studies from the University of Oregon. The UO Center for the Study of Women in Society supported Abelson’s research with the 2013 CSWS Jane Grant Dissertation Fellowship and an earlier CSWS Graduate Student Research Grant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Abelson describes her book on her website<\/a>: \u201cAs masculinity is being contested in the current era, I use an intersectional approach in Men in Place<\/em> to explore the shifting meanings of being a man across cities and in rural areas of the United States. I illustrate that individual men do not have one way to be masculine\u2014rather, their ways of being men shift between different spaces and places. Through in-depth interviews with transgender men in the U.S. West, Southeast, and Midwest,  I show how the places and spaces men inhabit are fundamental to their experiences of race, sexuality, and gender.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
