{"id":26901,"date":"2017-06-15T10:17:13","date_gmt":"2017-06-15T17:17:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/csws.uoregon.edu\/?p=26901"},"modified":"2017-06-15T10:17:13","modified_gmt":"2017-06-15T17:17:13","slug":"monique-balbuena-book-award-shines-light-diversity-jewish-culture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/csws-archive.uoregon.edu\/monique-balbuena-book-award-shines-light-diversity-jewish-culture\/","title":{"rendered":"Monique Balbuena: Book award shines a light on the diversity of Jewish culture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Editor\u2019s Note:<\/strong> Monique Balbuena is a CSWS faculty affiliate.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>June 7, 2017\u2014<\/strong>\u201cUniversity of Oregon Clark Honors College professor <a href=\"http:\/\/honors.uoregon.edu\/monique-r-balbuena\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Monique Balbuena<\/a> was recognized by the Jewish Book Council for her most recent work,&nbsp; <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Homeless-Tongues-Languages-Sephardic-Diaspora\/dp\/080476011X\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1496871304&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=homeless+tongues\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Homeless Tongues: Poetry and Languages of the Sephardic Diaspora<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cBalbuena\u2019s book was a finalist in the category of Sephardic culture for the National Jewish Book Awards, the longest-running and most prestigious Jewish literature awards. \u2018Sephardic\u2019 refers to Jews whose ancestors originated in the Iberian Peninsula, which includes Portugal and Spain.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/csws.uoregon.edu\/monique-balbuenas-book-homeless-tongues-finalist-2016-national-jewish-book-awards\/homeless-tongues\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-25913\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-25913\" src=\"http:\/\/csws.uoregon.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/homeless-tongues.jpeg\" alt=\"\" height=\"250\" width=\"166\" srcset=\"https:\/\/csws-archive.uoregon.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/homeless-tongues.jpeg 166w, https:\/\/csws-archive.uoregon.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/homeless-tongues-100x150.jpeg 100w, https:\/\/csws-archive.uoregon.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/homeless-tongues-160x241.jpeg 160w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 166px) 100vw, 166px\" \/><\/a>\u201c\u2018Homeless Tongues\u2019 examines three different Jewish authors who write in threatened and minor languages by analyzing their texts and observing the way they construct their identities through choices of languages and texts. Balbuena reclaims authors who have gone unrecognized within their fields.
