Her research for this section was funded in part by a CSWS faculty research grant. In this section, Bohls examined the unpublished journals of two white British women who spent time in the Caribbean slave colonies. For a contrasting perspective, she turned to a history that is the only surviving autobiography of an enslaved British woman.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/csws.uoregon.edu\/csws-research-matters-spring-2017-liz-bohls-looks-colonial-women-slavery-politics-place\/0417_research-matters_bohls_final_page_1\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-26523\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-26523\" src=\"http:\/\/csws.uoregon.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/0417_Research-Matters_Bohls_final_Page_1-232x300.gif\" alt=\"\" height=\"279\" width=\"220\"><\/a>The writings she examined by colonial women \u201cshed light on the gendered and politicized construction of home in the context of British slavery.\u201d Bohls posed the question: Can a slave really have a home? But she found that she first had to ask a more basic question: What is home?<\/p>\n<p>From her article: \u201cThe three women I discuss had one thing in common: they traveled, and their travels empowered each of them in different ways. Schaw and Nugent carried \u2018home\u2019 with them to colonial soil.
