1) Imaginactivism: An afternoon conversation with Renowned Author and Activist Starhawk about Social and Environmental Justice<\/h4>\n

In this afternoon event Starhawk will be in conversation with Professor Erin Moore, Department of Architecture; Dr Joan Haran, Marie Sk\u0142odowska-Curie Global Fellow, Center for the Study of Women in Society; Professor Erin McKenna, Department of Philosophy; Ruby Matthews, Growers\u2019 Make; and Allison Ford, Doctoral Candidate, Departments of Sociology and Women\u2019s and Gender Studies, about her well-loved ecotopian novel The Fifth Sacred Thing<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Starhawk will read key passages from the novel and panelists will reflect on the ways in which it imagines a future in which social and environmental justice are intertwined. They will discuss the kinds of activism portrayed in the novel as well as Starhawk\u2019s own experience with direct action and other forms of organization for social change and environmental regeneration. They will also talk about the ways in which the novel remains relevant nearly 25 years after its first publication.<\/p>\n

The reading and conversation will be followed by a book-signing by Starhawk.<\/p>\n

This event is sponsored by the UO Center for the Study of Women in Society, the UO Office of Academic Affairs, the Department of Women\u2019s and Gender Studies, and the Environmental Studies Program.<\/p>\n

2) Starhawk: Author & Activist, a talk on “Vision and Story for Challenging Times”<\/h4>\n

Says activist and author Starhawk, \u201cStories tell us who we are and who we can be. They can limit us or liberate us. The stories we tell determine what images fill our minds, what possibilities we believe in, what forces we set in motion. To make change, we must first envision it.\u201d In this free talk, Starhawk will draw from her visionary fiction, The Fifth Sacred Thing<\/em>, and its sequel, City of Refuge<\/em>, to help listeners find vision and inspiration for these times of great change.<\/p>\n

Starhawk is an author, activist, permaculture designer and teacher, and one of the most respected voices in modern earth-based spirituality. She is the author or coauthor of twelve books, including The Spiral Dance: A Rebirth of the Ancient Religion of the Great Goddess<\/em> and the ecotopian novel The Fifth Sacred Thing<\/em>, now in development for film and television. Her most recent non-fiction book is The Empowerment Manual: A Guide for Collaborative Groups<\/em>, on group dynamics, power, conflict and communications.<\/p>\n

Starhawk directs Earth Activist Training, teaching permaculture design grounded in spirit and with a focus on organizing and activism. She travels internationally, lecturing and teaching on earth-based spirituality, the tools of ritual, and the skills of activism. This talk is presented in partnership by Eugene Public Library, the University of Oregon Center for the Study of Women in Society, and the University of Oregon Office of Academic Affairs.
