She was Executive Director of the Mecanismo de Apoyo a Pueblos Ind\u00edgenas Oxlajuj Tzikin (Support Mechanism for Indigenous Peoples) (2005-2013).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/csws.uoregon.edu\/combining-activism-and-research-synergies-and-challenges\/americasrig_large_poster_final2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-24109\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-24109\" src=\"http:\/\/csws-archive.uoregon.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/AmericasRIG_large_poster_final2-200x300.gif\" alt=\"AmericasRIG_large_poster_final2\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/csws-archive.uoregon.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/AmericasRIG_large_poster_final2-200x300.gif 200w, https:\/\/csws-archive.uoregon.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/AmericasRIG_large_poster_final2-100x150.gif 100w, https:\/\/csws-archive.uoregon.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/AmericasRIG_large_poster_final2-260x390.gif 260w, https:\/\/csws-archive.uoregon.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/AmericasRIG_large_poster_final2-160x240.gif 160w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a>Dr. Vel\u00e1squez Nimatuj is the first Maya-K&#8217;iche&#8217; woman to earn the doctorate in Social Anthropology and she initiated the court case that made racial discrimination illegal in Guatemala. She has won numerous academic fellowships and awards for her journalism, She was a member of the Latin American Consulting Group of Indigenous Leaders for UNICEF and participates in the UN through the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. She also served as advisor on indigenous issues for the Latin American and Caribbean office of UN Women (2014-2015). She is the author of <em>Pueblos Ind\u00edgenas, Estado y Lucha por Tierra en Guatemala <\/em>(AVANCSO 2008) and <em>La peque\u00f1a burgues\u00eda ind\u00edgena comercial de Guatemala Desigualdades de clase, raza y g\u00e9nero <\/em>(AVANCSO-SERJUS 2002).
