Ellen Herman<\/p><\/div>\n

CSWS faculty affiliate Ellen Herman<\/a>, professor and head of the UO Department of History, was cited as part of the recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling on marriage equality.<\/em><\/p>\n

July 6, 2015\u2014<\/strong>\u201cEllen Herman had a busy day when the Supreme Court ruled about marriage equality because she and colleagues had a hand to play in it.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs she explained to The Oregonian<\/em> in a story following the landmark decision, Herman and 19 fellow historians filed a brief that was cited in the ruling that same-sex couples have the right to marry.\u00a0The historians have also filed briefs in other cases on the topic of historical evolution of marriage and gender roles.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018I am just thrilled to have participated in this and think it is a profound and positive statement about the role of scholarship and universities \u2014 especially public ones like the University of Oregon\u00a0\u2014 and the roles they can play in the most critical issues of our time,\u2019 Herman said in an email.<\/p>\n

\u201cReporter Jeff Mapes stated, \u2018Clearly, by looking at history, (Justice) Kennedy could build his argument that marriage remains so central and important to society in part because of the way it has changed over the centuries.\u2019\u201d
