{"id":31674,"date":"2020-04-10T14:27:39","date_gmt":"2020-04-10T21:27:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/csws.uoregon.edu\/?page_id=31674"},"modified":"2020-11-17T09:44:19","modified_gmt":"2020-11-17T17:44:19","slug":"2020-21-research-awards","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/csws-archive.uoregon.edu\/2020-21-research-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"2020"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2020-21 CSWS Research Awards<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2020-21 Jane Grant Dissertation Fellowship:<\/strong><\/h4>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Cristina Faiver-Serna, Geography, for \u201cGeographies of Environmental Racism and the M(other)work of <em>Promotoras de Salud.<\/em>\u201d Abstract: <\/strong><em>Promotoras de salud<\/em> (community health workers) are central to a public health model of care that addresses asthma in Southern California\u2019s Latinx communities. Toxic effects of pollution are countered through state-based programs that use <em>promotoras <\/em>to teach families home environmental management and proper medication technique. A cornerstone of many <em>promotoras\u2019<\/em> care-work is the experience of learning to manage their own children\u2019s asthma, and becoming empowered to help others. The environmental justice movement has always included public health services as part of its platform to achieve justice. Yet, EJ studies has failed to critically interrogate the state\u2019s provision of public health services as means to achieve EJ. Simultaneously, critique of the state\u2019s appropriation of the <em>promotora\u2019s <\/em>cultural education praxis, and the roles \u2018she\u2019 plays in her community\u2019s survival is an area of much needed inquiry in Latina feminist studies. This project asks: What role(s) does the <em>promotora <\/em>play in the regional response to environmental injustice in Southern California? How is the <em>promotora <\/em>called upon by the state to remediate and resolve environmental injustice in her own community? How does \u2018she\u2019 respond to this call? This project spatially mobilizes the Chicana M(other)work framework (Caballero et al. 2018) to critically analyze care-work of <em>promotoras<\/em>, and how it operates to (de)construct geographies of environmental racism.
