She joined the UO faculty in 1967 after earning her PhD in sociology at this institution. Her books include <em>Doing Comparable Worth: Gender, Class, and Pay Equity<\/em> (Temple University Press, 1988); <em>Class Questions: Feminist Answers<\/em> (Rowman &amp; Littlefield Publishers, 2006); and <em>Stretched Thin: Poor Families, Welfare Work, and Welfare Reform<\/em> (Cornell University Press, 2010), which she coauthored with Sandra Morgen and Jill Weigt.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/duckfunder.uoregon.edu\/project\/9491\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Acker-Morgen Memorial Lectureship<\/strong><\/a> was established in 2017 to honor the outstanding contributions of these two pioneers of women&#8217;s research.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1522\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a class=\"image-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/csws.uoregon.edu\/joan-acker%e2%80%94capturing-the-spirit-of-oregon\/acker-3\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1522\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1522\" src=\"http:\/\/csws.uoregon.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/acker.gif\" alt=\"Joan Acker\" width=\"168\" height=\"192\"><\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Joan Acker<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/csws.uoregon.edu\/docs\/publications\/09_Annual_Rvw_Acker_INTERVIEW.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Interview with Joan Acker, <em>2009 CSWS Annual Review<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/csws.uoregon.edu\/about\/part-of-radical-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Part of Radical Change<\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Remembrances of Joan<\/h4>\n<p>\u201cThis is truly a great loss. She never stopped writing academic papers and continued to give lectures all over the world after retirement. She also was acutely perceptive about politics. I remember being at a dinner with her when people started criticizing Barak Obama for his actions in the Middle East, such as drone bombings. She said, \u2018Well, he is what we have so it is our responsibility to work with him.\u2019 She had a sense of social reality and her\/our place as activists within the world as it is and could be. The work she and Sandra Morgen did on welfare reform was top notch. Joan\u2019s comments always made people sit up and take notice. And I enjoyed Joan\u2019s humor, she always made me laugh.
