2019 Call for Graduate Proposals<\/a><\/p>\n The Center for Latino\/a & Latin American Studies (CLLAS) Announces <\/b>Graduate Student 2019 Summer Research Grants <\/b><\/p>\n
In order to encourage and support interdisciplinary graduate student research in the areas of Latino\/a and Latin American Studies, CLLAS announces a program for summer research support. We expect to award up to three summer grants for $1,000 each to advance research for either master\u2019s or doctoral candidates. The award will support research-related activities carried out from July 1 through September 30, 2019.\u2217 We are especially interested in projects that link Latino\/a Studies or Latin American Studies with other disciplines. <\/p>\n
\u2217 If, due to unforeseen circumstances, research cannot be completed by the end of summer 2019, the grantee must obtain CLLAS Director\u2019s approval for an extension. <\/p>\n
Possible project topics include but are not limited to<\/b>: <\/p>\n
\u2022 history <\/i><\/p>\n
\u2022 ethnic identity <\/i><\/p>\n
\u2022 immigration <\/i><\/p>\n
\u2022 education <\/i><\/p>\n
\u2022 mental health and well-being <\/i><\/p>\n
\u2022 language and language use <\/i><\/p>\n
\u2022 popular culture and media <\/i><\/p>\n
\u2022 historical memory and human rights <\/i><\/p>\n
\u2022 gender and sexualities <\/i><\/p>\n
\u2022 Latino\/a literature, performances, or visual arts <\/i><\/p>\n
\u2022 testimonies <\/i><\/p>\n
\u2022 the impact of structural adjustment policies on local communities <\/i><\/p>\n
\u2022 environmental and economic sustainability projects <\/i><\/p>\n
\u2022 philosophical inquiries <\/i><\/p>\n
\u2022 public health <\/i><\/p>\n
\u2022 governmental or public policy <\/i><\/p>\n
\u2022 sustainable business practices <\/i><\/p>\n
Criteria for Application: <\/b><\/p>\n
1. This grant is available to graduate students currently enrolled at the University of Oregon who are pursuing a master\u2019s or doctoral degree in any discipline and conducting research with an emphasis in the areas of Latino\/a and\/or Latin American Studies. Former recipients are not eligible. <\/p>\n
2. The grant is available to all students regardless of citizenship or visa status. <\/p>\n
3. Research activities that are interdisciplinary in nature or which can demonstrate the potential to put Latino\/a and Latin American Studies in conversation with each other and other disciplines are particularly welcome, but not required. <\/p>\n
4. Applicants must show in their grant proposal what specific activities they propose to undertake, how these are directly related to their project, thesis, or dissertation research, and how the proposed activities will move the applicant forward in carrying out original research for a specific graduate degree. Students will be asked to present a one-hour talk on the results of their summer research during the 2019-2020 academic year. Students must also report to CLLAS any further grant funds they receive and share copies of publications resulting from CLLAS-funded research, including dissertations and masters\u2019 theses. Grant recipients will also be asked to write a report on their research for the CLLAS newsletter. <\/p>\n
APPLICATION PROCESS <\/b><\/p>\n
Application Deadline: 12:00 pm (noon), Friday, March 1, 2019. <\/b><\/p>\n
Applicants will be notified by April 5, 2019. <\/p>\n
Applications should include: <\/b><\/p>\n
1. Title and Description of the Project <\/b>| Describe the concrete set of activities to be undertaken and how these activities relate to a master\u2019s or doctoral program or other research in a maximum of 850 words. Use non-specialist language and avoid discipline-specific jargon. If you have a research prospectus for your thesis or dissertation, it will be helpful to draw from this document to demonstrate how the activities you will undertake relate to your master\u2019s or doctoral original research. Please provide a timeline for activities proposed. <\/p>\n
2. Budget and Grant Request <\/b>| Please include a budget for the project. How will the $1,000 grant be spent? (Please note that these grants do not <\/i>cover equipment needs such as digital cameras or laptops.) What other sources of funding are needed? Have they been secured? Are there other sources of funding you will use to meet the financial needs of your research? <\/p>\n
3. Statements of Qualifications and Vita <\/b>| Please describe your qualifications and capacity to carry out the proposed project. CVs\/resumes must not be longer than two pages. <\/p>\n
4. Letter of Recommendation <\/b>| A brief letter of recommendation from the student\u2019s primary advisor stating how this grant will enhance the student\u2019s ability to complete their degree is required. The letter should also comment on the quality and feasibility of the proposed project. This letter is an important part of the application. <\/p>\n
