Commenting on their selected passages will be panelists:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/english.uoregon.edu\/profile\/ebohls\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Liz Bohls<\/a>, PhD, Professor, Department of English<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/english.uoregon.edu\/profile\/mgershow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Miriam Gershow<\/a>, MFA, novelist &amp;&nbsp;Associate Director of Composition, Department of English<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/intldept.uoregon.edu\/profile\/ajoya\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Angela Joya<\/a>, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of International Studies<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/anthropology.uoregon.edu\/profile\/lamia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lamia Karim<\/a>, PhD, Associate Professor, Department of Anthropology<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/theatre.uoregon.edu\/faculty\/michael-malek-najjar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Michael Najjar<\/a>, MFA, PhD, Associate Professor, Department of Theatre Arts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Keynote, Laila Lalami: \u201cThe Border and Its Meaning: Forgotten Stories,\u201d 6 PM Eugene Public Library (with Q&amp;A followed by booksigning)<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To be held April 25, 2018, the 7th annual CSWS Northwest Women Writers Symposium will feature Pulitzer&nbsp; finalist Laila Lalami and her novel <em>The Moor\u2019s Account<\/em>.&nbsp;<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cllas.uoregon.edu\/the-border-and-its-meaning-forgotten-stories-7th-annual-csws-northwest-women-writers-symposium\/moors_account_cover\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9002\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-9002\" src=\"http:\/\/cllas.uoregon.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Moors_account_cover.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"193\" height=\"288\"><\/a>The 2018 NWWS working theme is \u201cThe Border and Its Meaning: Forgotten Stories.\u201d Built around Lalami\u2019s experience and expertise, this theme opens conversations about contemporary issues around Muslim life in the West, undocumented immigrants in the United States, the meaning of a border wall, and the significance of borders and walls in the United States as well as other parts of the world. <em>The Moor\u2019s Account<\/em> opens the conversation further, to a historic look at an ill-fated expedition of Spanish conquistadors (recorded officially by Cabeza De Vaca) and their interactions with Native Americans as they traveled from Florida into northern Mexico. Lalami\u2019s novel is an imagined memoir written in the voice of one of four survivors of the expedition, a Moorish slave considered the first black explorer of America. When juxtaposed against De Vaca\u2019s historic record of this journey, Lalami\u2019s novel, as <em>The Huffington Post<\/em> puts it, \u201csheds light on all of the possible New World exploration stories that didn\u2019t make history.\u201d &nbsp;One of the ongoing themes of the novel relates to the power of voice, the significance of storytelling, and the relationship of personal freedom to storytelling.<\/p>\n<p>From Lalami\u2019s website: \u201cLaila Lalami was born in Rabat and educated in Morocco, Great Britain, and the United States. She is the author of the novels <em>Hope and Other Dangerous Pursuits<\/em>, which was a finalist for the Oregon Book Award; <em>Secret Son<\/em>, which was on the Orange Prize longlist; and <em>The Moor\u2019s Account,<\/em> which won the American Book Award, the Arab American Book Award, and the Hurston\/Wright Legacy Award. It was on the Man Booker Prize longlist and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. Her essays and opinion pieces have appeared in the <em>Los Angeles Times<\/em>, the <em>Washington Post<\/em>, <em>The Nation<\/em>, the <em>Guardian<\/em>, the <em>New York Times<\/em>, and in many anthologies. She writes the \u2018Between the Lines\u2019 column for <em>The Nation<\/em> magazine and is a critic-at-large for the <em>Los Angeles Times<\/em>. The recipient of a British Council Fellowship, a Fulbright Fellowship, and a Guggenheim Fellowship, she is currently a professor of creative writing at the University of California at Riverside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Sponsored by the Center for the Study of Women in Society, in cooperation with the Eugene Public Library.
