Educational Methodology, Policy and Leadership (EMPL) is pleased to announce the\u00a0colloquium \u201cMiles de Manos: Lessons Learned from the Development and Implementation of an Evidence-Informed Youth Violence Prevention Program for Central America,\u201d with\u00a0Dr. Charles Martinez,\u00a0University of Oregon,\u00a0Professor and Department Head<\/em><\/p>\n

The countries of Central America provide a compelling lens through which\u00a0to examine educational and social systems at their most challenged.\u00a0Devastated by decades of civil wars, natural disasters, and economic\u00a0paralysis, as well as military, social, and drug trafficking violence,\u00a0many Central American countries face enormous challenges as they strive\u00a0to develop and sustain educational systems for their children. Yet, many\u00a0of the schools in communities in Central America also include tremendous\u00a0strengths, not the least of which is deep caring and love for children,\u00a0and commitment to improve conditions for the next generation.<\/p>\n

This presentation will discuss emerging results and the process of\u00a0developing and implementing \u201cMiles de Manos,\u201d a culturally specific\u00a0youth violence prevention program, in four countries in Central America.\u00a0The talk will address strategies for scaling up and disseminating\u00a0evidence-based practices in diverse contexts, approaches to measurement\u00a0and outcome evaluation in international dissemination, and the natural\u00a0tensions between fidelity and local adaptation in implementation\u00a0efforts.<\/p>\n

BIOSKETCH<\/strong><\/p>\n

Dr. Charles R. Martinez, Jr. is a clinical psychologist, professor, and\u00a0department head in the Department of Educational Methodology, Policy,\u00a0and Leadership at the University of Oregon, where he also directs the\u00a0Center for Equity Promotion. He served as the University of Oregon Vice\u00a0President for Institutional Equity and Diversity from 2005 to 2011, and\u00a0also served as a senior scientist at the non-profit Oregon Social\u00a0Learning Center where he founded and directed the center’s Latino\u00a0Research Team beginning in 1999. He has served as a publicly elected\u00a0member of the Eugene, District 4J School Board and is currently serving\u00a0as a Governor appointed member of the Oregon State Board of Education\u00a0representing Oregon’s 4th congressional district.<\/p>\n

His substantive interests center on identifying factors that promote\u00a0healthy adjustment for families and children following stressful life\u00a0events, (e.g. changes in family structure, socioeconomic status,\u00a0physical and\/or emotional health, acculturation, and immigration\u00a0status), taking into consideration the cultural contexts in which\u00a0families operate. He has led numerous NIH and internationally funded\u00a0research projects designed to examine risk and protective factors\u00a0involved in linking acculturation to education and behavioral health\u00a0outcomes for Latino children and families and to develop and test\u00a0culturally specific interventions for at-risk families in the U.S. and\u00a0in Latin America. His main areas of published work include substantive\u00a0and methodological topics related to cultural issues in prevention\u00a0science, Latino education and behavioral health disparities, links\u00a0between acculturation and discrimination on substance use and academic
\nfailure prevention, culturally specific family based interventions, the\u00a0role of biosocial stress markers on family outcomes, and family process.<\/p>\n

He is a nationally known consultant on organizational diversity issues,\u00a0cross-cultural research, and community engagement. He teaches courses\u00a0in equity, multicultural education, leading for diversity, prevention\u00a0science, and Latino family health and education. Dr. Martinez has\u00a0received numerous national, state, and local awards for his work,\u00a0including the “Community, Culture, and Prevention Science Award” and the\u00a0“International Collaborative Prevention Research Award” from the Society\u00a0for Prevention Research.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
