Mazzotti will offer\u00a0a public lecture, \u201cDocumenting the Iskonawa of the Amazon: Challenges to the Latin American Literary Canon,\u201d\u00a0followed\u00a0by a Q&amp;A session at 3.30-5.00, at the Knight Library Browsing Room.\u00a0Coffee and tea will be served. Here is the abstract for his talk and a\u00a0short summary of his publications.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h5>JOS\u00c9 ANTONIO MAZZOTTI, \u201cDOCUMENTING THE ISKONAWA OF THE AMAZON:\u00a0CHALLENGES TO THE LATIN AMERICAN LITERARY CANON\u201d<\/h5>\n<p>Through interdisciplinary research and recent fieldwork, this talk will\u00a0present an ongoing project that documents an endangered community: the\u00a0Iskonawa of the Peruvian central Amazon forest. The Iskonawa oral\u00a0tradition is full of knowledge about nature and survival strategies that\u00a0speak volumes about the environment and the possibility of coexistence\u00a0among humans and between humans and nature. However, like all indigenous\u00a0societies in Latin America, the Isknonawa are threatened by\u00a0deforestation, contamination, crime and drug trafficking. This case\u00a0study also sheds light on canonic texts of the indigenista literary\u00a0tradition and challenges some premises of postcolonial and decolonial\u00a0theory.<\/p>\n<p>Jos\u00e9 Antonio Mazzotti, professor of Latin American Literature in the\u00a0Department of Romance Languages at Tufts University, is also president\u00a0of the International Association of Peruvianists and director of the\u00a0Revista de Cr\u00edtica Literaria Latinoamericana.
