A Talk by Dr. Kathryn Sampeck<\/h4>\n

These days, chocolate is a fairly unremarkable part of our daily lives.\u00a0We have many ideas that we associate with it\u2014what color it is, how it\u00a0should taste, what kinds of foods it should be part of. All of these\u00a0qualities seem natural, intrinsic. Little would you suspect that\u00a0chocolate has a colonial past that involved some of the greatest horrors\u00a0of Spanish America. The fresh view of chocolate\u2019s history offered in\u00a0this presentation draws from archaeology, notarial archives, and popular\u00a0imagery and material culture to understand the complex connections of\u00a0pre-Columbian origins and colonial incarnations of cacao production and\u00a0commerce. The Izalcos region of colonial Guatemala, today\u2019s western El\u00a0Salvador, was the heartland of astronomical production of cacao, used\u00a0both as a comestible (including chocolate) and colonial currency. Cacao\u00a0was one of the first monocultural sources of wealth in the Spanish\u00a0Empire, and for this reason, the Izalcos was one of the richest\u00a0encomiendas in all the Indies and quickly became a key player in\u00a0Atlantic legal and contraband commerce, even luring Sir Francis Drake\u00a0there in 1579. The journey from these early colonial encounters with\u00a0chocolate to the more modern experience of it has much to do with who\u00a0produced chocolate, where, and when\u2014in other words, labor relations in\u00a0Latin America, local politics, and Atlantic World commerce, legal and\u00a0illegal. The genesis of chocolate as we know it was rooted in corporeal\u00a0and physical violence. It is a story of struggles against abuse and\u00a0marginalization, covert and overt resistance, and victories both small\u00a0and large despite changes in the political economy designed to thwart\u00a0those very efforts. The social history of chocolate is truly\u00a0bittersweet.<\/p>\n

Dr. Kathryn Sampeck (A. B., A. M., University of Chicago, Ph.D. Tulane\u00a0University) is an associate professor of anthropology at Illinois State\u00a0University. Her research focuses on the archaeology and ethnohistory of\u00a0Spanish colonialism in Mesoamerica and the U.S. Southeast. Sampeck has\u00a0been awarded fellowships by the John Carter Brown Library and the John\u00a0D. Rockefeller Library, Colonial Williamsburg as well as grants by the\u00a0National Science Foundation, Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological\u00a0Research, Social Science Research Council, Fulbright program, and\u00a0Cherokee Preservation Foundation, and her publications include articles\u00a0in American Antiquity, the International Journal of Historical\u00a0<\/em>Archaeology, Mesoam\u00e9rica, Ancient Mesoamerica, and Journal of Latin\u00a0American Geography, as well as forthcoming works in Historical\u00a0Archaeology and Ethnohistory.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
