{"id":5241,"date":"2015-03-11T12:21:27","date_gmt":"2015-03-11T19:21:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cllas.uoregon.edu\/?p=5241"},"modified":"2015-03-24T13:36:17","modified_gmt":"2015-03-24T20:36:17","slug":"dr-lynn-stephens-book-we-are-the-face-of-oaxaca-chosen-for-national-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cllas.uoregon.edu\/dr-lynn-stephens-book-we-are-the-face-of-oaxaca-chosen-for-national-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Dr. Lynn Stephen\u2019s book \u201cWe are the Face of Oaxaca\u201d chosen for national award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cllas.uoregon.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/We_are_the_face_of_Oaxaca_bookcover.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-5253\" src=\"http:\/\/cllas.uoregon.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/We_are_the_face_of_Oaxaca_bookcover.jpg\" alt=\"Stephen_Face_of_Oaxaca_CVRcomps.indd\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><strong>March 11, 2015\u2014<\/strong>A book authored by Professor Lynn Stephen, director, UO Center for Latino\/a and Latin American Studies, has been named the recipient of the 2015 Delmos Jones and Jagna Scharff Memorial Book Award from the Society for the Anthropology of North America. <a href=\"http:\/\/cllas.uoregon.edu\/lynn-stephen-presentacion-de-librobook-launch-we-are-the-face-of-oaxaca-testimony-and-social-movements\/%20\" target=\"_blank\"><em>We are the Face of Oaxaca: Testimony and Social Movements<\/em><\/a> (Duke University Press, October 2013) tells the story of a massive uprising against the Mexican state of Oaxaca, which began with the emergence of the Popular Assembly of the Peoples of Oaxaca (APPO) in June 2006.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Stephen is Distinguished Professor of Arts and Sciences, Department of Anthropology. In announcing the award, the selections committee stated:<!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">\u201cWe were particularly impressed with the innovative way you approached the social movements that began in Oaxaca with the teachers&#8217; strike in 2006, utilizing the testimonials of your collaborators and also focusing on the important role of women. This is an ethnography that emphasizes context and the fine-grained details of specific events along with the voices of men and women who were there. We also want to emphasize your use of a website providing video clips and the full-length testimonials, giving full-authorship to your collaborators. In awarding the prize to you and your collaborators, we want to highlight the way this book serves as a model for the kind of collaboration that should characterize an anthropology that is engaged with critical social issues.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">The goal of the Society for the Anthro\u00adpology of North America is to address the need for a focused voice and
